Government Guidelines/Regulations – Shooting Activities
As you are aware the Government updated its guidelines on Monday 11 May 2020. The regulations were published on Tuesday 12 May 2020 and we sought force legal advice to ensure that both the force and Thames Valley Police certificate holders were complying with the regulations. On Friday 15 May 2020 our position changed to the below:
Our advice for all certificate holders is to comply with the Government guidelines. Thames Valley Police will not be taking action in respect of shooting activities on shooting grounds, or private land, provided the activities are otherwise licensed and lawful. We urge anyone considering taking part in such activities to comply fully with the current government guidance about the conditions on which outdoor recreation may take place. If you do not heed this advice and are found in circumstances where your activities could result in the emergency services being called out or that suggest a danger to public safety or to the peace, this may result in consideration being given to the revocation of your certificate/s.
Our position is now supported by the Government (Under Secretary of State Sport, Tourism and Heritage) who responded to the BSSC on 20 May 2020 confirming that shooting activities are permissible. Below is the relevant paragraph from the Sports Minister:
As you are aware, on 11 May, the government published updated guidance on lockdown measures, including updates on how people can remain active. From 13 May, people are allowed to go outside more than once a day for exercise as long as they are following social distancing guidelines, alone, with members of their household, or with one person from outside of their household. People must still only exercise in groups of no more than two people, unless they are exercising with their household.
Any facilities associated with outdoor sports and physical activities, including shooting ranges, can now reopen, if those responsible for them feel ready to do so and if they can do so safely, and in line with related public health guidance’
we have all been observing all the guidelines and following all the rules while all the people who should have been running ragged to help, seeing as we pay them to do it ,where ****ing in a puddle as usual and making their own up.absolutely shocking how all the orgs and police have conducted themselves they should be ashamed.
Yes, but so should some of the members here who were all too ready to tear anyone who dared suggest shooting on private land previous to this a new one! Nothing's really changed except that exercise is now "unlimited". Private land was always private land and any restrictions on exercise clearly do not apply on your own private land nor on private land upon which you have permission to use. As far as shooting alone or with one other person on private land is concerned, I can't really see that anything has changed except that shooting clubs are free to re-open as long as social distancing can be maintained.
I wonder what they think will constitute "disturbing the peace" though? It only takes one busy-body using a nearby PRoW to report that a few shots disturbed their peace or enjoyment of the countryside to raise an incident number and have it investigated.
