Basc voluntary lead ban

I shoot a Damascus barrelled guns and I also shoot modern steel proof guns.

IMHO the sensible approach to lead would be, If shooting for personal use of quarry then lead should be available to use without restrictions, ie amount purchased or shot per annum. Wildfowl restrictions still remain.
If shooting on a commercial shoot where the quarry is to be sold or gifted into the food chain then non toxic shot to be used.

But then again common sense ain't so common anymore.

Ok, thinking ahead......serious question: how long will shotgun cartridges keep for? I still have half a box of cartridges I had 10yrs ago and they still go bang.

From what I’ve read this ban will only be for game so you’ll still be able to buy normal lead cartridges - you just won’t be able to use them on game.

I still have some ,well loads from ww2 still in good nick and aluminium foil wrapped by FN in 20g they are older and still look fine , I have shot some of the win AA from back in the 80's this year that done what they said on the box's ,storage is the key .

Seems like! [emoji849]

Frankly I don’t know what we pay them for if they’re just going to roll over on everything, and now they’re rolling before they’ve even been pushed.

Ridiculous!
I don’t pay them , but feel free to continue to do so

I note that the CPSA member benefit (£72 under 60 years of age; £62 over 60 years of age) includes all lawful shooting with shotguns including live quarry such as game and pest control.

I have just now visited the CPSA (Clay Pigeon Shooting Association) website and used their online enquiry facility to send them this message:

I have read the following on a UK Shooting Forum that I belong to following a press release that BASC, CA, GWCT, CLA, NGO, BGA. SACS, Moorland Association and SLA "wish to see and end to both lead and single use plastics in ammunition used by those taking all live quarry with shotguns within five years".

So in response I posted this: If this is true I will be contacting the CPSA (Clay Pigeon Shooting Association) on Monday and seek clarification that 1) They aren't a signatory to this nonsense and 2) that as stated on their website that membership of the CPSA gives public liability for live quarry shooting and that it's still £72 a year under 60 and £62 a year aged over 60. If as I am hoping they don't subscribe to 1) then I shall be joining them and seeking to end my membership of SACS.

Could you, please, advise me or the CPSA position on the use of lead shot and "single use plastics in ammunition" and additionally the CPSA position on the use of both singly or together (as in lead shot and a plastic cartridge case) for live quarry shooting with shotguns.

I am hoping that you do not support the above nonsense as I and I think many, many, many others will now be looking if that is the case to seek our membership with an Association (that gives as a benefit shooting insurance) with the CPSA.

I will post their reply on SD when I have it.

If this is true its for ALL live quarry shooting. Game days, pigeon, shooting corvids, squirrels, foxes etc.
BASC have proved that they and the others who are supposed to speak for shooting are disingenuous. No sound evidence - no change, no doubt we will be treated to an explanation of why they (and the others) have found the 'evidence' so overwhelming and incontrovertible.

I hesitate to say I told you so - but - I told you so.
I hope all current BASC members are interested in their countryside pursuits enough to ask WHY, and then to withdraw their subscriptions.
Money talks and obligation and conscience walk. Disgrace.

Playing devils advocate here chaps

How can any of these organisations represent us if they are stuck in their ways and won’t embrace change in the face of this rapidly changing world? we all know lead is toxic and we can’t go on about selling game, venison etc and how healthy it is when it’s riddled with lead.

I hate lead alternatives and I own air rifle shotgun and centre fire, I’ve never really got on with steel shot although I haven’t tested it sufficiently. I’m also a fisherman and no doubt this will effect the larger fishing weights to eventually.
The sad fact of the matter is a group of stalkers representing shooting in our own small circles largely goes unnoticed by the general public an organisation making that announcement gets noticed by the public and to many hopefully will look like a step forward in promoting shooting for the better .

yes some might say the beginning of the end, but I personally will be carrying on preaching shooting and all it’s worth to as many people as I get the opportunity to.

I just don’t see how the big organisations can parry off attacks on lead shot in today’s age and especially in this eco climate.

i do think BASC are up their own arse and don’t come out swinging but I am still a disgruntled member at the moment . I am also with the GWCT , woodland trust and songbird survival.

And if as many do you are part of a syndicate, or a rough shooter, or a pigeon shooter who keeps all they shoot then where's the problem? I hope that it's an internet hoax. Truly I do. But if not then as I've posted I hope we can see a way forward via joining the CPSA.

That’s a valid point if it’s just for home consumption, but unfortunately the big game shoots doing 300 bird days won’t get away with that answer.

Make no mistake I’m not happy about it either but it’s one thing that in the eyes of many (educated and uneducated ) lead isn’t good. I’ve been eating game for years with No side effects as yet and I imagine there’s some old boys twice my age and more.

Also just like to point out that it’s not just BASC who’s agreeing to this apparently it’s most of the big names. According to that previous post And some I respect A LOT more than BASC such as GWCT.

Assuming the contents of the email are accurate, it looks like this 'voluntary ban' had backing from the well known organisations, including NGO (which I belong to) and SACS. It will be interesting to see the reasons why they have supported this move.
