dont bother with 243 wast of space in any cabinet get a 6.5x55

Don't start reading up a lot about calibres. Deer don't really care. Find out about rifle shooting, learn if the opportunity arises. An air rifle will teach you the same skills. And by all means research and daydream about the sort of rifle you'd like one day. But calibre isn't really that important, it's just technical nonsense people obsess about....

A million different answers to that. Get one that is legal for all uk species, fits you well and that you like as if it’s your only one you’ll be using it a lot. If you’re not reloading then don’t go for an exotic calibre as ammunition will be scarce and expensive. Go for a good name (Sako, Tikka, Sauer, etc) second hand over a cheap new rifle and don’t rush to judgement or set your sights on a specific rifle but see what’s about for a good price when you have your FAC and the money.
