firstly you dont say what rifle you shooting me i use a 22250 for foxing and a 2506 for stalking the tikkat3 lite has a millet i bought second hand for 100 pounds as funds are always short however i rarely miss a fox at to 250 yrds with it shooting a 55 gr ppu at the moment so anything past that is pushing it i think before the millet i had my 8 x 56 smidt on the 22250 same result 250 yrds reticule so big the fox would have to be as big as an elephant to see it but see it i could no messing about with focus reticule lines for distance my mate has a z 6i he takes ages to fire some times on my 17 hmr i have a hawk 3 9 x 40 good for 100 yrds on rabbits 150 on foxes but so is my shooting ability with that rifle so whats the best scope to buy the one that suits your ability and rifle i could put a nightforce on my 17 but wouldnt shoot any more with it.if you happy to shoot out to 250 yrds get a 8 x 56 smidt you wont go wrong its just like my missus simple but gets the job done lol hope this helps
i have the zeiss victory 6x24x56 and as the other's on here who have them said there superb. ive shot out to 250 with it using lightforce 170 and orange filter.
factors to take into tho at these ranges are weather. some nights the mist etc just takes the power off the beam to much. also the lamps don't seam as bright when your shooting a fox on a field that's just been turned over. the dark mud back stop really cuts the beam down.
where on say a stubble field the lamp seams alot more clear and bright
Always shot plenty of foxes with 8x56 Pecar and 240 Blitz but shoot more now using Starlight Longbow with US GEN3 tube fitted and Maxikite for spotting.Atb Ed
I was beginning to wonder if anyone was unsure of how to get their filters off!, right up until Yorkshir'es post,.............. a big Blitz on white allied to a Swaro BDC permanently on x10, no problem.
I also use one of Scopes. It is Brighter than my S&B PM 11 5-25x56. I only lamp occassionally when my friend has an errant fox. Nevertheless the Zeiss on my 243 is what I use though i never shoot further than 150 meters at night. It is a big investment but you get what you pay for. I have a Leica scope as well, one of the new models which is 3.5-13x42 if I remember correctly. The glass is crystal clear but the reticle is too fine for lamp work.
Many years ago I bought a scope from AGS for NV work. It is the 4-16x56 model with a side focus. For the money it is incredible. It's on my .222 and is light years ahead of the cheaper scopes, no pun intended.
I've used my 8x56 to shoot foxes out to 300 yards with a lamp. The 56mm objective and 30mm tube brings as much light as possible back to your eye. I believe Schmidt and Bender to be the best when it comes to night time shooting. They can give you that shot at a deer just before last light when others will fail you too.
It's not the scope that's holding you back, it's the lamp.
If you have a Blitz 240, white light and focussed in you can clearly see a fox way beyond 300yards and my scopes wouldn't be half as good as yours Brian!
I have shot a LOT of foxes with the lamp (Lightforce 240 Blitz) and my best was a 362 yard (leica laser rangefinder proven) shot with an RPA Interceptor 6.5-284 Norma, it was on a steep field which had fairly light grass and the fox stood out really well through a Nightforce NXS 8-32x56 scope, now got a Schmidt PM11 5-25x56 and its definately better than a Nightforce.
