Bipod Options for Sauer 404

Evening All,
So I’ve had a Sauer 404 for just over a year now and have managed without a bipod up to now. However going to start doing some hill stalking so thinking I’m going to need a bipod. Obviously there is the official Sauer option however this comes with a fairly hefty price tag for what it is. There’s also the salamander adapter but I’ve heard some horror stories about them chewing the fore end of the rifle up.
I have a Harris bipod and although simple does the job very well and would ideally like to use this on the 404.
What have others done to get around this predicament?

Thanks in advance

I use the Salamander and Spartan combination and confess to being nervous at first because it doesn’t feel especially robust. That said, I’ve tightened the adapter and leave it in place, and it is great. Lightweight, unobtrusive and strong enough for what I do but I don’t ‘load’ the bipod.

I’ve tried the Tier One offering but the adapter failed. I’ve also got a Bog Rapid Shooting Rest which works really well. If I was starting over I’d probably just stick with a bag and I’d have saved a bit of cash. I love my 404 but I don’t like the Sauer branded ‘aftersales’ piece.

What predicament? Fit a sling swivel stud under the fore end and use the Harris.

PUSH & GO from Germany, I have one on a Sauer 404 and it takes a Harris bipod.
You can take it on or off when ever you like, carry it in a backpack and put on when needed.
Expensive but it works for me, seen it at the Jag & Hund this year.

Can you take the stud off without tools? I thought you had to unlock it by inserting a small allen key or similar.

For sure; they’re ideal for hunting use. Also, free play is desirable for accuracy so the rifle recoils straight backwards instead of bouncing.

The last thing I’d want to do to a nice 404 would be to kludge some bulky, heavy, rattly-spring-having ‘70s-era bipod onto it.

Sounds and looks like a good solution. Does this then fit flush with the stock and then you put the swivel insert in when required?

I tried a salamander on my 202 but the pull of the sling worked it loose on occasion so that the adapter twisted round

I have a salamander for sale and the spartan bipod to go with it if needed. Drop me a PM.

Do you know if the Push and go fits a 202?

Use your rucksack as a rest and don't waste your money on a bipod.

Just as an update. Had a stud installed in the forend by a gun smith friend. Installed so I still have enough room to store the tool in as standard. Would defiantly recommend this as an option and considerably cheeper and IMHO more sturdy than the other options on the market.

After faffing about with various replacement forend attachments etc. this is exactly the solution I ended up using.
Should have done this to start with rather than spending money on gizmos that were too fragile to do a decent job.

Did the same myself 👍
