Bl88dy horse flies

Old teamans trick when the heavy horses used to get worried by the gadflies on the farm, to put some elder flower leaves & flowers under the bridle, works until the leaves start to droop, the two of us would be hoeing sugar beet with foliage in our hats & belts, my mum made a tea of it & squirted round the house cow, works for a while then you need to reapply.

Gadding about, or warbling.😁
Trying to be polite, but I believe the term also applies to frisky women who go gadding about with their tail in the air! :)
Ive seen cattle so tormented by them that the whole herd sat in a stream up to their shoulders, like a herd of hippos.

In the bad old days before I tied up the cows for milking I used a flit spray down the whole milking shed probably full of DDT. A result of the whole lot bolting back down the field one morning and making me late for school. Damned warbles everywhere on the cows backs then.

TFH, warble flies are just disgusting creatures, but didn't we irradicate them, I think we traded them in for mad cow disease, there was a definite link there, between the pour on OP"s & mad cow disease, but they tried to shut that farmer up.

Unfortunately still about, see them on Red deer ooop North.

That's a good piece. I'm told that the ball trap idea is quite effective. Apparently when horseflies take off they always do so vertically, hence the flypaper gets them. I think there is another kind of ball trap that drowns them.

Great tip, I'll give it a go as I react very badly if the things get past any reppelant!
Here's my top tip for cleg bites.

Apply hand sanitizer to bite as soon as possible. . Nine times out of ten it comes to nothing, no itching, no pain or discomfort, no redness or swelling.

I'm guessing it kills any bacteria associated with the bite. Who knows but it works a treat.
