Bucket list hunt?

Sounds great! Not fancied going back?

In a heartbeat!!! I took my own rifle across and it was an amazing experience. And I think I may hold the claim of being the only Scotsman to have shot two raccoon with one shot in the swamps of Berrien County, lol!

Unfortunately though, a marriage, the purchase of two horses, and a couple of redundancies have precluded the availability of funds for a return visit for the time being. However, my host came over in August last year and we treated him and his son to some Scottish stalking, so the potential is always going to be there

Yes I live in Devon, drew the tags, planning is key and making contacts over there, 10 days minimum, I did 2 weeks, it is achievable, Elk is the tough bit, deer is easier, so allocate the first week to Elk, second week to deer.
Cheers
Richard
I’m definitely going to look into this. I’ll probably blow a fortune on tags! Would be an amazing trip though!

If you need any help at all get in touch.
It was more expensive this time as the exchange rate sucked, the tag alone cost £800!
But it has been under £600 in the past, flight was £900, in the past under £600, accommodation Is pretty cheap, especially if you tent it!
Area's, West Montana for Elk, East for deer.
It's very 'doable' if I had paid an outfitter it would have cost around $15,000!

Huge difference! So is it £800 to go into the draw? With a needle in a haystack chance of getting one? You’ve got me thinking though!

I've always wanted to shoot 100 pigeons in a day

I did that once in a peafield near Flint. It was a scorching day, and I was only in a t-shirt. By the time we'd got 99 birds I was flinching. We averaged 50/50 up until that last bird, but it took me 11 shots to get it. Man, my shoulder was every colour under the sun!

Yes, you pay up front, if you don't draw you get a refund, hopefully the exchange rate settles down one day.
It isn't a needle in a haystack, I have been 4 times and drawn each time, for people like us there are 17,000 tags available.
Cheers

A Chamois in the Austrian Alps

A Blackgrouse in the Scandanavian Arctic

A fly in hunt by a Piper Cub in Alaska or Montana after a bear or Elk.

And I have still to shoot a Red Stag in Scotland - I have only ever shot a couple of yearling spikers and hinds.

And a good Bull Kudu in a mountain area of Africa.

No matter what it is you want to do then, if at all possible, make it happen as you are a long time dead.

In 2017 I achieved several things I'd always fancied doing, sort of bucket list stuff. In the spring I had a Grimersta Spring Salmon which for me is a huge achievement as I'm not really a salmon angler and spring fish there are very rare (there are usually 3 - 4 of them caught in the 4 months before the main "summer" season comes in) plus I'd lost one in 2015. This is perhaps the most exclusive and remarkable salmon fishing in the world and we fish with lightweight trout gear so this was a springer on a 7 weight trout rod. I did a report to the forum but it was when my photos were hosted on Photobucket and so they are gone and the report is meaningless however here's a wee video I cut:

Then in the Autumn I got a stag with ponies on the East of Lewis. It was something I'd always wanted to do and it produced a fantastic day out and the report remains a good record of it:

A little Lewis trip with stalking, salmon and bogs.

Or there's even a wee video of bits and bobs including the ponies:

Now my circumstances have changed somewhat and it might be there will not be much in the way of sport this coming year plus I'm getting older, and less fit and... So if you can do it then do it as soon as you can.

The other thing worth considering is that a lot of people say they don't have time, or money, to do this stuff. However these are often people who are then looking an excuse to spend £3k on a scope. It is also the case that some workplaces will give you unpaid leave etc. as that has been how I've been able to do some of the stuff I've done recently. Yes I'm broke, yes I'll not be buying £3k scopes, but I'm getting to do stuff that soon I will not be able to do and the only place the £3k scope gives me any advantage is on the internet. So my advice is to see how you can spend your cash on buying experiences and just go out and do it.

In the immediate future to try and shoot, muntjac, red, sika and elk. Not necessarily in that order and no time scale.
In the distant future timber wolf, pronghorn and whitetail.

muntie and sika will do for me,doesn,t have to be trophys/stag just couple of day,s different from my normal stalks. simple pleasures.

A bear and a moose, ideally one in Alaska or Canada and one in the Nordic countries and quite a few things in the Selous in Tanzania too if I won the lottery. These would be my ultimate hunts. I could do the bear or the moose, if only I could feel free of guilt toward my family. I have talked of much cheaper things I would like to pay to hunt and offered my wife anything of similar value she wants so she does not feel left out but she just says "Go and do it if you want to but just because you want to waste money and family time doesn't mean I need to too". That seems to stop me.

Just retired. Finances won't get any plumper going forward. So I need to quickly allocate the small surplus I have now lest it is squandered on quotdien consummables in the year ahead. And the knees are showing high mileage (both have had a little scrape-n-vac work) . So...

...I am booked on the hunt of my lifetime in the Limpopo region of SA. In 5 weeks. Kudu, Eland, Wildebeest, Buffalo. :)

Great stuff! Looking forward to reading the write up!

Something in the mountains after wild sheep of some description.

It's got to be hard work with lots of climbing, lots of time spent watching with binos, probably a decent long shot, long walk to retrieve it, decent set of curled horns and finally a custom lightweight magnum rifle.

Not too much to ask then!
