Driven Boar - things you do/don't find useful

My boar trip is this weekend in Bavaria, I am all set I think but wondering if there's anything I would find useful, or what I won't need from the ordinary stalking kit, for example binos.

What did you guys take that you found useful and what wasn't? Knife, binos, hunter orange hat, other tools or accessories that you would/wouldn't take again would be appreciated

Cheers

This is what I found most useful for driven boar in Croatia.

Thermos flask and chocolate bars, for when you're standing on the peg. Apart from its reviving effect, opening the thermos guarantees that a boar will come running past you as you're pouring out the coffee!

Compact binoculars, for looking at local wildlife. Similarly, small compact camera.

Folding stool or shooting stick. I also took a pair of Knobloch shooting sticks, as handy for resting the rifle on, as well as occasional use (I shot several boar as they were standing still, and the sticks really helped)

If it's really cold then consider a small square of rubber to stand on (e.g. from a cut up pair of wellies) and some of the single-use chemical hand-warming pouches.

Something blaze orange - hat, tabard, waistcoat, etc.

Have a great trip!

Binoculars, bright orange hat, jacket and neck gaiter.
A shooting seat of any type.
And regardless of time of year etc, gloves and hand warmers.

Didn't occur to me that a more typical, still target might present itself. Any faux paus that might be committed by taking a shot at a stationary target?

I do have a set of Primos sticks which fold up fairly compact and could be an option.

The folding seat is very handy for waiting long periods. Merino baselayers help against the cold and if it’s freezing even grab a cardboard box to crush flat and stand on. Helps stopping the crunching of snow underneath

Not in Croatia :D

Having watched Franz-Albrecht Oettingen-Spielberg shoot boar doing everything from standing still to running at top whack, there didn't seem to be any worries what speed they were going at!

Good point.

Once I got to my peg I also cleared the area underfoot of any fallen leaves or twigs.

When you're standing there it can be awfully quiet, and the last thing you want is to spook an approaching boar as you re-position by making a sound akin to walking on Rice Krispies!

The weather near Regensburg is - has just stopped after 3 days of incessant rain and is warming up sun is breaking through and the forecast looks good, supposed to go to the UK tomorrow but am down with cold/covid? all is closed today German reunification bank holiday so no tests possible. Roads will be busy on Tuesday as start of the working week.
Enough Euros in cash form for wirtshaus visits as they almost never take cards in the back of beyond.
Leadfree ammo?
Leatherman for if a case gets stuck in the chamber.
Sunglasses.
ear plugs rather than muffs unless using a moderated rifle.
Thin gloves.
I have used a hessian sack to stand on before now, quiet and insulates.

BB is right as usual about taking Euro's in cash. When driving to and from Croatia this summer I was surprised how many places didn't take cards, hotels, restaurants, motorway services etc and that was true for France, Germany and Austria especially. Fuel on the card was no problem.

On the original topic +1 for a comfy stool/seat plus stay still and quiet not forgetting they can come from behind as well so keep a good look out.

Take a stool to sit on. make sure its tall enough that you can stand up quickly especially if your old joints are a bit stiff. I take a knobloch mono stick with me. This is not for shooting off but for balance when walking too the stand. very useful if your a top heavy old git like me. I use a rucksack that also carries my rifle. great for carrying a extra layer or two or light weight wet weather gear, plus ammo and stool. Electronic ear muffs when shooting with the double rifle and Electronic ear plugs when shooting the Mauser because it has a raised comb.
Dress for the weather conditions as even at + degrees you can easily get chilled out in the forest after a couple of hours. getting chilled is uncomfortable and your shooting skill goes to crap. I bought a , Swedteam heated vest, money well spent warm without bulk. Put on your hunting cloths for a cold day whilst at home and see how it feels to shoulder the rifle. Clothing that is too bulky can be a real hindrance to good shooting.
My self I don't take bino's just another thing to lug around and often don't take a knife unless I'm going to be cutting a bit of sausage or dried meat. Don't take a big pig sticking knife you will just look like a prat.
Low power scope and be able to shoot with both eyes open. Being able to shoot off hand is a bonus.
Bottle of water or coffee and a choccy bar of some sort.
If a pig stands still, bonus

As per above - be ready for extreme cold. It creeps up on you. Also take off some layers then wrap up at the stand (or post) if you have a long walk in, no good being wet with sweat at the start. Thermos also a v good call. I sometimes take a shooting stick or primos, has paid off well in the past but otherwise - try not overload with kit.

And use your stalking principles when you head in, amazes me how many driven hunters rush in as quick as they can and even take a s*** when they get to their post! Boar have an unbelievable sense of smell and are damned smart, they will be looking for holes in the line so try to look like one! ;)

Remember when talking or greeting other hunters say weidmannsheil or they will say it to you, your reply is weidmansheil, if a beast is taken by you they would say waidmannsheil your reply then is waidmannsdanke.

A good link to traditions for US hunter servicemen.

Many thanks for that link - very interesting.

A nice write up on St Hubert too. I doubt even one in 100 of the UK shooting community would even be aware of the story!

Plus not to forget a carabiner to put in a cut in the beasts mouth and some nylon rope say it weighs all told 200 grams to be able to drag your beast to the nearest track for extraction
