Everyday Boots question

I found sizing to be critical with this boot more than any I’ve owned. One size larger was a must for me in part due to their narrow fit.

K
Yes i think you are right . Their sizing is very specific. Its the only footwear that i know that goes up in 1/3 of size . I got my first pair at a store that sold mainly asolo and the guy spend some time to make sure i got the right size . As it turns out 43 2/3 is a thing .

I would say 'great idea', but the AKU GTX seems to have a habit of not lasting very long. Turns the boot into a sloppy slushy mess after about 3 months.
I wish they'd do a non GTX version of this high leg boot, I'd rather get wet feet and know they'll dry out quickly.

They used to

Another ‘surplus’ option to look at are the Iturri cold wet weather boots.. new in box around the £70 mark if you bide your time on eBay, I started with a pair of the Haix ECW equivalent but got a pair of Iturri’s for last years beating season.
They’re an upgrade on the Haix and have a Meindl style rubber rand… all good so far despite me not taking particular care over them or what I kick through undergrowth wise.

The only thing that niggles me with them is that they have a closed loop locking cleat at the hinge rather than a hook… have they never heard of speed lacing?

cheers

Rumour has it the issued itturi is off brand altberg

Best everyday boots I've had were Altberg Warriors. I wouldn't recommend buying military surplus ones(Defenders) they're similar but not the same quality. I’ve found that I can take the warriors out of the box, give them a polish and wear all day with no issues, the surplus ones take a lot of gradual breaking in or I get bad blisters.
Surplus ones are made to a lower standard sadly, hated my issued one so much I bought their "sneakers"
I now have their "Raby country boot" for this kind of thing

Wear these in your wellies. You will have good stability, no rubbing or socks being pulled down and dry feet for hours.

I'm going to try a pair of these, it's the bane of my life and the reason I don't wear wellies much. That and they always seem to twist my trousers around for some reason.

Surplus Matterhorn boots are well worth a look. Unlike the more modern surplus offerings they were bought ‘off the shelf’ from the manufacturer - so not a cheapened version. That said, boots are a very personal thing/fit. What suits one person can provide end to end misery for the next person such as to wide/narrow punching the Achilles etc. etc.

Another vote for Brandecosse. Not the cheapest but you get what you pay for. Very comfy, my pairs have lasted extremely well with harsh abuse.

I've got alt-berg steel toe caps for when I need foot protetion and also mil surplus ones for the rest of the time, bother are super comfortable.

They make on contract for mod to a spec so you will see the same spec as altberh, karrimor sf etc. bought my son these iturri, same as SF (identical) and decent
In theory yes.. however the iturri I had were far superior to the altberg and aku I also had at the same time, perhaps I got a lemon of a pair. Absolutely nothing wrong with surplus kit if that suits you and your budget

I have the LeChameau for dog walking, deer stalking and walked up shooting, they are 4 years old and going strong

I use a Lower Tibet - they are pretty much the Hunter but with three loops as opposed to 4 so not so high leg.

They are pretty good for everyday pottering, dog walking etc.

When it comes to British winter mud dog walking type chores I still don’t think much bears a good pair of wellies. There are wellies and wellies. What you need is one of the walking types with a decent sole. If you go Neorprene lined then the uppers are stiffer.

The beauty of a wellie is they keep the mud and water off your clothing. Are quick to put on and off, which is important if you are going in and out of the house etc.

With any walking type boot, they do take time to lace up properly and to keep wet grass, mud etc at bay you really need gaiters - which are just yet more faff.

I still have a pair of Kudu Wellies that must be now 15 years old. Will happily walk several miles in them on a days rough shooting on taking the dog for a walk. But I put boots on if needing support on steeper slopes.

Mountain and hill use - i use a tough mounteneering boot - La Sportiva Karakorums or Scarpa Mantas

These might be slightly overkill but by far and away the best boots I or anyone I know has ever used. Pfanner Tyrol fighters, they are chainsaw boots but I wore them for years, utterly abused them in mud and water daily and they laughed everything off. By a pair of these and you'll never need to buy another pair again.

Altberg Sneaker Aquas. I’ve but loads of boots through their paces over my time and the Yorkshire made (not under MOD lisence) have stood the test of time, I’ve had a couple of pairs for 9 years and have been resoled more than once. The Aquas I’ve had for a little over a year but they’re just as tough and have quickly become my go to boot.

British Army surplus cold weather boots, I have a pair and they get hard use and still going strong after 3 years (I look after them well). Cost me £50. So I can have 3 or 4 pairs for what others are paying for one!
