Good start to the Irish deer season

Yesterday was the first day of the deer season here in Ireland, and this morning the weather was fine so I decided to go for it.

After putting all my gear in the car I set off towards one of the grounds where I have permission, about 15 miles away. After only 3 miles or so I was coming round a bend, and the front of the car smacked straight into a mature sika hind, sending her flying into the verge on my right. As I watched the deer fly through the air, the words "well that's one way to hunt deer" literally ran through my mind.

The poor thing was badly injured, but still alive. So I jumped out, grabbed the rifle out of its slip and screwed on the suppressor, chambered a single round from the top (one of the many reasons why I love my Sako is the ability to do that) and finished her off with a head shot from about 12 feet.

After loading the carcass into the plasterer's bath I use for carrying deer, and that into the car, I turned around and drove back home. I wouldn't say I was even gone for more than 10 minutes all in.

What a way to start the season!

(The car shows no sign of any damage, which is a relief since collisions with deer at speed can really destroy the front of a vehicle, and people have even been killed in this way.)

Christ, a Mondeo written off by a muntjac?? A Cherokee totalled by a fallow pricket??

The deer I hit was about as big as sika hinds get (I struggled to get her into the car, she was that heavy).

Don't know HOW the car wasn't damaged.
