Head Transportation

Hi everyone, I have a trip to Ireland planned later on this year to try and get myself a Sika stag as it’s my last one of the deer species left on my list still to get.

If I’m lucky enough to manage to get one I would like to bring the head back so my taxidermist can do me a shoulder mount. My question is what are you guys using to transport your meat/heads around so they don’t ruin as I will be going for a week stalking.

Salted is the best way, but to do that to its best you’d need to cape off the skull also which is a slightly more skilled job.

Don’t bleed it, if you have to finish it off, shoot it in the chest, don’t use a knife.
Cape it off at least half way down the rib cage to the Atlas joint with a cut along the backbone
Remove the head at the Atlas joint.
Keep the flies off, they’re absolute cnuts for laying eggs inside the lips or up the nostrils or inside the ears and the big green ones work really fast.
Put head and cape in a black bin liner, tennis balls on the points will help prevent holes, and pop the lot into a fridge or freezer.
Skinning off the head is best left to the taxidermist or someone else who knows what they’re about.
Don’t let it heat up and go sour, the hair will slip, a shoulder mount of a bald deer is probably not what you have in mind.
