How many rounds to you take Stalking

I have two 3 shot mags so I just take those both filled up. If I need to zero check I chuck a box in the car to do that and then fill my mags when I am done, the rest stay in the car. For the ground I have 6 is fine, and of those six I will only ever shoot 5 deer as I won't take a shot without a backup round should I make a mistake.

10 simply because that's how many is in the leather wallet. Once I've converted the Howa to detachable mag, then itll just be whatever 1 mag holds.

Funny old world, isn't it?

All these people worrying about shaving 10g off their mounts,100g off their scopes and quibbling over long vs short action for a 250gram weight saving then carrying around 300grams of ammo (10 rounds of 270) to fire 1 or 2 round at a deer...
I’ll include myself in this but I always think the shooter would be better off shedding a few lbs than worrying about grams on the rifle!

I was up in Sutherland twice a year - mainly Sika - for fourteen years.
First week up there (not knowing better) I took 100 rounds.
Two stalks a day, five days stalking, ten stalks in all.
Came home with 98 rounds...

Down in England - Roe, Muntjac - I have 5 rounds in the clip and 5 in my hunting waistcoat. Most I have shot in one session is three.

In light of what is said in the above post by Acm - the older (and heavier) I have become the less rounds I have carried in an attempt to balance it out.

Using that logic - 100 rounds down to 10 rounds, makes me one fat bast*rd...

Always carry 7 rounds - can't quite remember how I got to that number, but kind of a tradition now.

Wouldn't normally shoot more that 3 in an outing, but good to have spares.

For deer or prong horn 6 shots. Elk where I chase them is remote in the extreme so 6 on me and 20 or so in my pack. More insurance should the extended outdoor stay happen ( god forbid).

Locally my 7 round belt wallet gives me a full mag, one up the pipe and 2 spare which is plenty. If I’m elsewhere on a cull session I’ll plan accordingly.

What is the kudos in taking as few rounds as possible?
The answer should depend on where you are stalking, what you are after and for how long you are stalking.
I would rather take some spare rounds home than run out!
Over the years I have seen slings break, swivel studs come out, rifle dropped or fallen over and unexplained misses requiring a zero check and possible scope adjustment.
Imagine you are down to your last couple of rounds and you wound a deer, the deer moves off, you miss shoot again , then you are in trouble.
I know SD members never do bad shots ,but this is the real world!

One shot.

You answered the wrong question K. He asked how many rounds do you take with you, not how many shots do you take on each deer. :)

We all know the old advice of never taking a shot when you have less than three rounds left unless it is to end suffering. So you would never go out with less than three rounds and if you are down to your last three rounds you should call it a day.

With me it depends on the rifle I'm using. If it is my Sako, 5 in the magazine plus five in a belt slide or in pocket loops. If it's one of the doubles it two in the chambers plus five in a belt slide or pocket loops.
The most I have ever shot on one stalk was five rounds to kill four deer on a cull. I only took two shots on the one deer because the stalker that I was with said "That's the worst bloody shooting that I've ever seen, you missed shoot again". I was confident that I hadn't missed but shot again as instructed. It turned out that he was looking at a totally different deer each time I shot.

Of course if you are away from home for the week or a week-end you will probably take 20 or so rounds in your luggage just to cover all situations.
