How many rounds to you take Stalking

I only carry the three in the rifle. I have always been a, confirmed, believer of, "one shot, one kill". The additional two rounds to cover optimism; one never knows if there will be more than one opportunity.

Either 7 or 14, depending on which little ammo-wallet-belt-pouch-bullet-holder thing I put my hand on first...

EDIT: Actually, I tell a lie. The 7 round pouch I normally only carry 6 in, otherwise extraction is a pain in the proverbial...

I will normally take 15-20 rounds with me . Better to have too many than not enough. I’ve had a guest out and for some mechanical reason the rifle setup changed between a shot at the target and his shot at the stag . We ended up firing 13 shots to kill the stag . I ended up having to point the rifle at the stag as we couldn’t hit it using the sights . It’s not a good feeling knowing that you have to hit it as you are down to your last bullet . I’ve also had guests arrive with 6 assorted rounds ! But he had two good boxes back at his b&b 🤪.
We all owe it ,as a true hunters to respect our quary and to ensure that, no matter what , we can despatch them as quickly and humanely as possible.

This many . Lol

Unleash hell on them damn deer lol

I believe this is the weapon of choice for the John Muir Trust...… handy in the Argo when you've got the minigun mounted and room for the spare battery! You don't even worry about carcase retrieval! :coat:

I usually take two/three plastic clips from factory boxes with whatever i,ve loaded 3/5/7/10 of each cal for zeroing /checking loads if weathers ok. but only load one mag for stalking, one holds three the other two hold five,

10 in a bullet wallet. Its more than enough for a day out, enough for a zero check and it means I can easily check I have accounted for my ammo at the end of the day because I know I took 10 out with me and I should always have 10 cases in the wallet at the end of the day (some fired and some not).

When I was a kid (many years ago!) in the Air Cadets we had a Warrant Officer on the squadron who had been in the Northumberland Fusiliers and had a chest full of medals telling the story of his war from most of the major battles of North Africa through Italy. He let slip one evening on the .22 range in the TA Muster Hall that "You can never have too much ammunition. If you don't need it you can take it back. If you need it and don't have it you are in trouble". Delivered in very broad Geordie.

RIP George Clayton.

For general stalking I always have a full mag and a wallet full of 10 more. My sling also holds two for quick access!
I did once foot stalk 11 wild deer in one afternoon. 9 Muntjac and two Roe Does.
For collaborative or park culling I would take a lot more.

Normally 5 in mag and 5 in wallet. Count them out and count live and empties back.
I once spent a while looking for a missing round untill I remembered I had shot a fox from the bedroom window a couple of weeks before and hadn’t replaced the round!

I carry a 7 round leather wallet. When I get to the ground I put four in the rifle and leave three in the wallet. (Never needed all seven) . Usually only need one or none!

Weight is not a consideration for me, so happy to carry more rounds than I am likely to need. I have dropped a rifle whilst on a stalk before, and having a surplus of cartridges to re-check zero was crucial to the day's progress.

A pouch on my bino harness holds ten 6.5x55mm. Four are transferred to the rifle magazine at stalk's commencement.
