How much and when do you tip a stalker?

Very good , gentlemen. I think I have more than a rough idea now. The stalker(s) and I will get along. Thank you.

Gentlemen,

I will be visting beautiful Scotland shortly. I have booked four days of roe stalking with probably two outings per day, so eight outings in total.
I am uncertain on what the common way is to tip the stalker. Do I do this per outing, per day or at the end of the week?
And how much is appropriate?
Thanks for your help in advance.

Did you book directly or through an agent?

Better to tip at the end if you are going to. Better still, get to know the stalker a little better as if you are succesful and want to return, it is much easier if you get on with someone on first name terms.

Also depends if it is on an estate or just their permission. Use discretion accordingly.

I know the gamekeeper (self employed) quite well and have done some shooting with him previously. So the booking is a direct one.
The reason I was asking is that all previous arrangements were made by a friend of mine who is no longer amongst us. Therefore I have to dig into the details myself now.

PS: I am from abroad and don‘t want behave inadequately.

Sorry for your loss. Good luck and all the best.

If the stalker is underpaid to the extent that the estate pressures you to tip him £50 (just to put a figure on it), then otherwise the estate would have needed to pay him another £80 to allow for PAYE and NIC deductions. This £80 would have cost the estate an additional £11 in Employer's NIC pushing the estate's additional costs costs to £91. The additional £91 passed on to you would have attracted a further £18 in VAT.

So you have a choice; subscribe to a system where you pay £50 cash-in-hand, or a system where you pay £109, of which £50 goes to the stalker and £59 goes to the Treasury. The morality is a matter of philosophical debate, the figures illustrates the pervasive nature of the UK's taxation regime. I take no side.

I used to Beat on a shoot in the Home Counties. It was a smart enough shoot and the carpark was loaded with money.

Once saw the Keeper return a "tip" (it was a £5 note) to one of the Guns in front of his companions.

"You obviously need this more than I do sir".

I’m not a full time pro stalker but help a few lads out especially this time of year with their clients if they’re busy , general rule of thumb is about 40-50 quid , I’ve had less and more but I’d say that’s about the average ,

I think Stalking on the hill albeit Hinds or Stags would require a more generous tip because a lot more goes into the day with time and equipment but Stalking Roe morning or evening for 2/3 hrs i think a £50 tip per outing is quite high on top of an outing fee + Kill fee. Just be generous with what you can afford and it will be well recieved.

Hi I always find this a weird thing within shooting. It has become an expected thing, how many other people get tipped to do the job they are getting paid to do. If I was a guest at a stalk or game shoot fine but if I’ve just paid £800 to stand in a gun line why do they expect more?

When I go to your house and prep and skim your ceiling and walls clean up and leave tidy and you tell me what a fantastic job it is I then charge you £235 why don't I get a tip?

I would remember someone was an idiot long after I’d forgotten how much they tipped. 😁

I’ve tipped more for a long day on the hill in biblical rain with no shot taken than I have for some days that put good deer in the larder.

How many people work an 80 hour week for 200 quid ?

If they’re part of the job are you suggesting that all stalkers in receipt of these tips are paying what is due to HMRC?
