HOW MUCH!

All very sound advice above, although I wouldn't share your opinion over how difficult it is to get a FAC in the first place. I found it a very straightforward, fairly quick process. Never had any trouble getting the calibres I wanted (either at first grant or variation), and ticket opened when requested (after about a year). In fact, much easier than subsequently finding land with deer on it, and getting my first shot!
If you can get a 243 for foxing then you're halfway there - the deer can be added as and when. You could of course use paid stalks for "good reason", but given that this thread is about starting stalking on a tight budget, it's perhaps not an option.
I never have a hassle with variations etc and from day one I had an open ticket, and I guess I always have deer to shoot, but, I do deal with a lot of guys through the syndicates that are applying or renewing FAC's, I have heard guys waiting 18 months before getting their first FAC and the amount of problems when asking for larger calibres as well, so although some of us are lucky other are not so. It really does depend.

My observations so far is that when it comes to sourcing what I’d like on my budget - I just wish my right eye worked properly! We need more left handers selling up

There is no right or wrong with budget. Its not better to spend more or less if your family dont suffer and if you adjust your shooting to your equipment.

Ive spent a bit, had a lot of pleasure with what I've used and like to look back on how my equipment has evolved.

Some people are in the fortunate position to within reason, buy what they want, because they can afford to. Others are on a tighter budget, and buy the best they can, for what they can afford.

Some have more money than sense, others have more sense than money :-| :) A rifle is either accurate, or it isn't. You can either see clearly enough through a scope, or you can't.

Fact of life, there will always be people who have more, and always people who have less. Most important, live within your means !

If someone posted a thread here, "WHY SO LITTLE", they would get slaughtered !

Still it’s nice to have nice stuff. Is it better stuff?not sure but nice absolutely

Where I would differ slightly is optics. Get the very best you can afford. I use Swarovski for all scopes and bins. Expensive yes BUT there service is amazing and worth it just for that really. Had a slight issue with EL range bins 2 years old. They collected mine lent me another set FOC and repaired mine and sent back to me in 7 weeks not even postage to pay. Not sure many of the low end scopes would do that? But perhaps they might

You could talk about this about everything in life really cars, clothes, food and in certain cases for those that like the late night ladies women:p

But the fact remains some things in life are just nice and if you can afford them then why not.

Deer stalking is an expensive pass time, so It always makes me smile when people suggest they want to do it on a budget.

Can you get cheep kit that will get the job done? Sure

Can you find cheep stalking IE land you can shoot for free?

That bit is not so easy for a newbe.

Depends where that newbie is coming from. A newbie stalker who's already part of the rural scene, a local person, on good terms with local farmers (perhaps even working for them), maybe already involved in shooting in the area, pest control etc, has a very high chance of securing stalking ground for not much money (or even for free) where an experienced, yet city based, stalker might fail, despite having the wherewithal to pay top whack.

Nope. But it seems you never miss an opportunity to slate qualifications, even if it has nothing to do with the thread. Must be awesome at a party.
Ah you got to bed around 4 then . Seems pretty relevant to me when we’re on about how much money is spent on getting started .... and unnecessary expense. ( don’t get chance for many parties mate im too busy stalking )

I was a newbie once and not that long ago, I’ve still got 1800 acres or so of stalking across 4 landowners that all link up for free, or, for the cost of reliable vermin control.

This also means my buddies who reliably help me with the vermin control get their stalking for free too!

Even paid stalks can be cheap if you’re happy to take cull animals.

As I said, not so easy
