Is 7mm ammunition the same as 7x57

It's really quite scary how little some gunshop owners/staff know about their products.

As for 'any shop should be able to order it in for you', believe it when you see it.

All these are the same thing: 7mm Mauser; 7x57; .275 Rigby. American ammunition used to be marked 7mm Mauser FWIW. European (continental) ammunition usually marked 7x57. Kynoch stuff even if sold as .275 Rigby was usually marked 7mm Mauser.

NOTE THAT .275 RIGBY IS NOT THE SAME AS .275 HOLLAND AND HOLLAND (WHICH IS A RIMLESS BELTED CARTRIDGE)

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/7×57mm_Mauser

These are also the same thing BUT not the same things as the above: 7x64; 7mm Brenneke; 7mm Rigby Magnum. This last being quite rare as I think that Rigby only ever made two rifles in 7x64 chambering (which they called and marked on the barrel as 7mm Rigby Magnum)

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/7×64mm

These are also the same but now use the Imperial size designation: 7mm Remington Express; .280 Remington.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/.280_Remington

These are ALL different one from another: 7mm Remington Magnum; 7mm Weatherby Magnum; 7mm Sharpe and Hart; 7x33.

But! Fear not! Regardless of what actual rifle you have on your FAC if the ammunition authority merely says "7mm" then you will be allowed to purchase ammunition for it even though the marking on the box or the headstamp may say 7x57 or 7mm Mauser.

I hope it helps! Cannot Helston Gunsmiths at Water-Ma-Trout help out?

Okay, had to make call nearby so went into Exeter's Mega, Supadooper, Sportsman Gun Centre to pick up my Hornady 170g FP 'Hammer of Thor' deer putter-downers, and found that they have the following on the shelf, (albeit with boxes looking a bit dusty):

Federal Power-Shok SPRN 175g x 2
Federal Classic 175g x 1
Federal Power-Shok 140g with Speer Hot-Cor bullet x 1

That's it, although the serving person did say that getting Privi Partisan in 139g & 173g SP wouldn't be a problem.

Bet they're not priced at about £8 a box like they probably were when they went on the shelf!

I don't know about Federal. etal., but Remington 175 grain RN ammo was the round they made for the 1902 Remington Rolling Block single shot rifle. It is (was?) VERY anemic, speed & pressure wise, but will kill large deer handily. I remember my brother ran out of my handloads for the custom 7x57 I'd built him and went to the local hardware store and bought a box of Remington 7x57, 175 grain. He thought his rifle was broken because it hit 9" lower at 100 yards than my 140 grain Speer handloads.~Muir

That Remington 175-gr was in the old green box, the High Speed ammunition, about 2,200 fps from a 22-inch sporting rifle.
The original specs are 2,393 FPS from a 29-inch barrel ( No.1 Rolling Block 7x57 or Chilean Mauser), , at 47,900 PSI.

Here are a bunch of what is available today for the 7x57 Mauser.

I love this calibre and have had several rifles over the years chambered for it. Any gunshop can order in ammo for you, it is readily available in my experience. I recently had RWS ammo ordered in, which came quickly. Hornady do a good load and the Federal stuff is fine if a little slow. Just ask your local gunshop to order some for you.
