Just Beaters day to go

Is it not actually the 'keepers day and should be by invitation only? It is not a free for all but for guests that have helped in the seaon about to end?

Do the beaters get to shoot on the 4-6 outside days ? If so that's there beaters days ?? We have our beaters day on sat then an outside day AFTER the beaters have had a go .i have great beaters and pickers up I would like a few with more dogs and NOBS was great help this year but you need guys who can come week in week out who know the ground and can make snappy decisions .
there should always be a beaters day ! If I went all season and then was told the syndicate was taking the beaters day you could swivel that's not cricket and the folks running the show don't give a dam and arnt gentlemen .

if you'll pay the travelling norma we could come to some arrangement, have 9 working dogs :D

Hmmmm... Sounds like maybe you go to the same shoot that my kids beat at. Pretty similar, anyway! Always some excuse why the traditional beaters day gets cancelled. Been that way for a few years. Have a bit of a day at clays in May instead, but it's not the same, is it.
no clay day either VSS so there must be others doing the same.

Yes and no we had people who were invited as you say plus all the beaters so many people involved we had three days at the end of the season to fit them all in.

Havn,t been beating for a couple of yrs , mainly due to the attitude of shoot owners/ managers, one told beaters at the end of the day, he had forgot his wallet as he went to the pub with the guns, he never paid for that week, it's not the money, but the principal , on one shoot the sydicate paid the beaters via the keeper/ landowner, half way through the season, one of the sydicate ( a buissness friend) asked me why we had no beaters, I said because you tight barstewarts don,t even cover the petrol, although give them a drink. He stood there mouth open. It turned out the keeper/ owner was pocketing the money, and they thought we were getting fed as well. The next week the guns provided food directly and gave the money to the beaters themselves, strangely they didn,t shoot there the following season.
I have beaten on some great shoots, where the beaters were treated like gods, I remember one owner sayin to me, "that he would hate to think people went beating just for the money" I replied you are right there, I earn just under £200 a day at work.

Had my best ever beaters day last Wednesday. The owner only has 4 full days of which I missed one due to work commitments. However we had two teams of 7 for walk one stand one plus a few beaters including the shoot owner who was purely a beater all day (except when he was waiting on us at lunch time) and picker ups. One picker up was one of the main guns during the season. Anyway, the birds flew really high and fast as they always do on this shoot due to fantastic terrain and perfectly placed woods and game cover (The owner and his father before him started planting additional woods 20 or so years ago). The bag was 228 head of which I must have shot 25-30. It wasn't just the numbers or quality of birds that made the day though. We were fed and watered very well at lunch time. The craic was good and the walking guns (bar the usual errant one) concentrated on beating! As I was new to this shoot I hardly know anyone there except the owner but one of the beaters still asked if I was OK for a gun at the last full day. If I ever move I will travel a long way back to ensure that I keep picking up on this shoot. The owner certainly appreciates his team of helpers! Clearly that is not the case with several keepers mentioned on here or several that I have been on in the past. Shame on them and hopefully they read my post.

As one of Dougs team yesterday who did'nt shoot but picked up all day for the beaters, as I can't shoot driven birds. He invited my son to shoot in my place who had a marvellous day. That is the way to entertain the troops that have worked hard for you all season, what great organisation and generosity.
Now we have our beaters day on Tuesday I hope ours goes as well as Dougs. Well done and thank you from us all .Wf1

Nice one Doug a credit to you. That's the way it should be done. Appreciation shown to everyone who has helped make your season a success is the least managers/owners can do.
Thanks to "Blackditch" I've just got back from an invitation beaters day in Somerset. Steve a long time friend decided to offer me his gun on their beaters day. The days total of 46 good birds, great craic a bar meal and a few beers in the evening was the result of a fantastic weekend with fellow shooters.
Look forward to your account of Tuesday's beaters day WF1

Had our first beaters day today, second one tomorrow with a few friends as well. We had a great day today - cocks only, with the exception of the under-keeper and me, the shoot owner, who got a hen each which only added to the fun with more excuses for banter! Keepers, beaters, pickers-up, drivers all get to shoot.
I provide elevenses, lunch and drinks and the walk-and-stand worked brilliantly, no-one out of line and everyone had some shooting.
Weather was beautiful, a truly delightful day.
Same again tomorrow on the other estate.....

Supposed to be the last Saturday but We've just been informed by the head keeper that beaters day has been cancelled altogether as the owner has informed him that he has sold the beaters day to a team of paying guns that shoot there regularly. Everyone is totally pi**ed off and should really walk away for the rest of the season on principle, see how he gets on with his 300/500 bird days then.
cant have a shoot day with no beaters
