K98

That's bad news . Was it the Russian Capture rifle you mentioned , or is this another rifle ? I noticed too , I described my 8mm as an M24 , it's actually a VZ-24 , old guy moment .
Is the M-48 you mentioned still available ? They are a lot of rifle for the money .

No this is being advertised as an all matching numbers top price K98.

I ended up buying the K98 after all, the bolt numbers have definitely been changed; but otherwise it a great condition rifle. I paid around what I think its worth, and am happy. The seller was still adamant it was all matching numbers, but a couple of serious Collectors have confirmed what I thought - the bolt has definitely been re-numbered in an attempt to make it all matching, butt plate has been blued etc. Not a big deal to me, my main requirement was that it was a shooter.
I put a box of Privi through it, and grouped OK. Since then I have given the bore a proper scrub, removing a fair bit of crud. I have done a ladder load test and ended up with 170gr round nose soft points over Viht N140 grouping well at around an inch. I am very pleased with that! The bore looks its 70+ years age, but the rifling is clear all the way.
Going back to open sights is an experience in itself, and the rifle feels great in the hand with no scope or moderator altering the balance.IMG_1290.webpIMG_1272.webp

Looking forward to my first Roe with it.

Glad to hear you are pleased with it. 1" with open sights is pretty good going I'd say.

As Druid says , glad to hear it , and 1" groups with issue sights is really good shooting . It may not have matching numbers , but that's a very cool old warhorse , I'd take it in a heart beat . Let us know how you do on the Roe .

The metal and wood is in really good condition, so I am not surprised that the bore turned out to be sharp, too.
Did I miss where you said who the manufacturer was?

Didn’t put a ruler to it, but I’m calling it near enough to an inch.

Good shooting! Is that with cast or jacketed bullets?

I've got a Yugoslavian M48 with my name on it when my ticket comes back.

Hi Andy

I am hand loading 170gr Hornady interlock round nose softpoints, these give the best groups out of my rifle.
Let us know how you get on with your M48 when you get to put a few rounds through it.

hammo, do you mind sharing your load, or your powder and the velocity?
On what sort of deer, ranges, etc do you plan to use it?
Going to just hunt with the open sights? Sounds like it is ready to go to the woods now.

You must work up to my load!! Of course.
170gr Hornady round nose soft point
47gr Viht N140
CCI standard primer
PPU brass.

I have not got a fps on it yet, but it groups best of the ladder load I ran, starting at 43gr of powder.

47 gr of VV N140 should push that 170-gr bullet along at 2,500 fps, which is a mild load, and nice in that it is about the same fps as a normal 200-gr load, so you can shoot both with the same sight setting and sight picture.

Southern
Yes the book says I should be seeing about 2500 fps.
I will be using it in and around the woods, on Roe and Muntjac.
I will stick with the open sights.

As I am sure you are aware, Hornady makes two 170-gr 8mm bullets: one .323 inches and the other .321 inches.
I load the .321 bullets in my 1888 Commission Rifle, which is 8x57I.
I load the .323 bullets in my 8x57IRS and my various 8x57IS and 8x60S rifles.

I had do fiddle a bit to get the milder loads to shoot well in some of my rifles. They all seem to like all weight bullets moving along.

Let us know when you bag something with that vintage Mauser.

Update on hand load.

Hi all,

Just a bit of an update, crono'd my 170gr RN,SP handload last week; and was only getting 2200fps - although great groups.
Had an unplanned week off work, so worked up a stouter load from the Vihtavouri website.
Not gone too crazy, but now loading 50gr of N140 and getting a stunningly consistent 2471fps, the three shots were all within 1fps!!
Should probably do a ten shot string but I don't like wasting that much ammo.

I shot a group at just under 100m, and it was a couple of inches, with open sights and my eyesight I am over the moon with that!!
An A4 sheet of paper with a felt-pen black dot in the middle at 100m looks awfully small over open sights - try it!

Looking forward to dropping a Roe with this Rifle, but been Foxing mostly as its Lambing time.
May get lucky on a daytime Fox with it!
