Kafkaesque events put my drilling in a coma: it may never wake up.

Pine Martin, try Teague chokes they make a full lelength thin wall sleeve that they fit inside the original barrel with a bit of machining

Some of the things in this country are becoming ridiculous, we have a car that has an engine management light on, tried changing various sensors etc at c.£100 a time but no solution. New MoT legislation now says that it won't be able to pass a test despite running perfectly well, meeting emissions regs etc. Before anyone suggests it, you can't just disconnect the light because this is checked. Basically we are going to have to scrap or sell/trade in for a pittance a perfectly good car for no reason whatsoever! Not condoning it but you can see why people don't bother playing the game with rules and regs etc.

Not wishing to hijack the thread but is this supposed to be a light that comes on with ignition and goes off when engine running ?

Well I have just checked a couple of my older guns. No barrel dimensions either. Thanks for the warming.

Birmingham Proofhouse were insistant that this made it officially out of proof, meaning that no gunsmith could do work on it and release it to the owner, or sell it, until it was resubmitted for proof.

And, did the Proof House expalin how they can therefore usurp an individual's right to the return of his private property. It's taking the proverbial. I sent you a PM. But, please, it's not for publication in public.

Tales of the proof house - about 5 years ago I had a Sako 223 with an A1 action rebarrelled by Border Barrels. When submitted for proof the proof house stamped it ".243" - needless to say this was eventually corrected but the experience has not endeared me to the proof house or its supposed experts!

A somewhat left field suggestion but have you considered getting the shotgun barrels turned into rifle barrels? It would of course be expensive as you’d need two barrels fitting, bushed firing pins, modified extractors and eccentric adjusters installed to regulate it but you could go to 45 Colt. Even at 30ksi (+p hot handloads) 45 colt still has less breech thrust than the 16 bore does, so presuming chamber wall thickness on the new barrel was sufficient you could have a very effective double for muntjac.
Simply a suggestion to get the creative juices going.

Am I right in understanding that the proof house damaged the gun?

Can’t you get compensation then? Enough to cover cost of repairs or replacement?

Seems extremely unjust if not.

If the firing of a proof load damages the gun, it's deemed to have failed. No come-back, as far as I'm aware.

Hi Pine Martin

I have recently bought an old side by side 12 gauge. It was made in 1875 and was then re Nitro Proofed in 1925, so it's an old gun that has been through the proof house twice. The right hand barrel is fine but the left hand barrel is very slightly out of proof.
I paid the huge sum of £48 for it at auction and I'm now about to spend £1000 having it restored (the only reason is that it was made by a relative of mine). Now, the guy who's doing this for me has said that he would never sell me the gun or even state in writing that it is fine to shoot as it's more that his jobs worth, but he wouldn't hesitate to use it himself, it good for a few years yet, then it's a case of re sleeving.
He advised me not to send it for reproofing and gave his reasons why, here goes.
Every cartridge manufacturer has a maximum load to load to legally. They only ever load to about 80% of this as this will keep them still well under the maximum in the event of the perfect storm, atmospheric pressure, humidity etc, causing a gun to blow up in someone's face. Now when the proof house test the gun they use a charge of 120% of the maximum legal load, so effectively they up the charge by 50% of a standard cartridge. So yes effectively they are deliberately trying to blow the gun up, sometimes this works.
I know it doesn't help your cause, but at least you may now understand why it failed.

Hope you find a happy outcome to your problem

Paul

P.S. the gun is legally still your property so you should be able to get it back even if you can only use the rifle barrel, technically the rifle barrel is still in proof to use?

PM, send it back to Germany and have them sell it for you, you will at least get some funds and you can find a newer drilling.

You should be able to get your gun back from Alan Rhone, there is no sale or transfer of ownership, nor is the sale within the UK so what the proof house says is irrelevant then. If the transfer is costly, have a weekend over there or in France and drop it off. You can carry it with your EFP.

Scrummy

It's still my gun and I could have it back, but can't sell it or anything. Under those circumstances, I don't want it. Neither do I want it just as a single shot rifle: the whole point is that it's also a shotgun. So I'm going to give it a year to see if spare barrels can be found, and if not, I'll scrap it or sell it for parts, and probably import a better drilling from France or Germany, or see if anything exciting and not too expensive turns up at auction.

Afterthought: is anyone interested in a 6x43 Nickel scope with a German Number 1 reticle, with the upper half of the claw mounts? How about with the bases too?

As I said, not in the UK, but when next in France... ;)
