Keeping guns in different locations

hi all,

I was told today by an RFD that I have to tell police in which gun cabinet my firearms are, I have 4 cabinets in 3 different houses (my house, other house and grandparents house) and my guns swap and change between these places fairly regularly, all of my safes are registered with the police, can someone shine some light on the situ for me.

Thanks :)

Well the police in Somerset are lacklustre at replying to anything, RFD was fairly certain but I wasn't sure, hence the question

Where did you tell the police you were going to store each of the firearms? As in at your interview and or on your paperwork.
Does your FAC conditions stipulate where you have to store them?
If you have the statutory conditions they usually say something along the the lines of using reasonable precautions for the safe storage of the firearms when not stored at your home address.
So if you don’t have a condition that prevents you from storing them elsewhere ie something that says you shall “only” store at X. Then I don’t know any legal reason why you can’t store them in an appropriate police approved cabinet at the other addresses. Provided no one else has access (or any prohibited persons live there) you should be fine.
If you are going to ask your firearms licencing department, I would suggest you do so in writing. Ask specifically if there’s any legal reason why you can’t and if so what is it. That way you should prevent a no simply because they don’t know or can’t be bothered to find out.

Just had a browse of the FAC and it only says about firearms being stored securely, c’est tout

I don’t know of any legislation that prevents you from doing what you are doing.
Are you a member of one of the shooting organisations? If they have a legal department an email to them might be better than your FLD in the first instance anyway.

A friend shares all his firearms (rifles and shotguns) with his two daughters. The daughters live in two different parts of the country to him. The guns could be in any one of three locations, he has not had any problems with this.

I think that you are seeing non-existent problems.

my son and I From different addresses share some of our firearms and we have never been asked at which location they are. I don’t think you need to worr.

I wouldn't have thought this would be an issue, but surely a 2min call to your FLO should sort this out? If it were me, as has been suggested before, I think I would like it confirmed in an email just in case.

I have permission to store my rifles at 2 houses. When I say store, I mean permanently, not just for a weekend whilst away stalking.

In my case, my license has a condition which says they may also be stored at the address which is not my home address (the certificate address).

I have never been told, or had it suggested, that I have to tell the police where the rifles are. It is simply a case of either or.

They didn’t seem to give a hoot about where the shotguns are stored.

When you completed your application did you specify all the addresses where you keep the firearms? If so no need to do anything. It's none of the RFDs business
