Legal Advice- is there a 3000 ft lbs limit for UK deer use ? Some police forces believe there is.

For the life of me as much as i like big guns ........ I just cannot think why i need any more superfluous weight and recoil , noise , within the UK ? A 243 win will normally exit the cavity of a red stag at pretty decent range and the correct bullet.

.243 Win won't make the energy with black powder. Struggles with nitro in a 20" 🤣

I had 9.3 for deer since 2000. Used it for moose abroad. Last renewal I was given a condition to only use it on my Red stalking ground. I can’t be bothered to fight it tbh as my desire to shoot ever bigger animals has waned.

Based on recent 'job opportunities' advertised here, it seems that having a low salary expectation is the only strict requirement.
Its in line with most of the Police Support roles.... which are in the main part, relatively low skill level jobs/trained in house/ paperwork admin type roles.

I can only speak for the general opinion of my force, at the last point that I dealt with them.

Calibre seems to be a big deal. If the list says .30 for deer then they will grant a .30 for deer. In my case I asked for a .375 Winchester for deer and they said no. .375 is on the list for dangerous game so it's not suitable for deer. No amount of reasoning would shift them, even giving info on the energy levels etc from reputable sources which they could reference. In the next breath though, they gave me a .416 for boar. There is no list for boar so they don't have to adhere to it. At that point they seem to fall back on the fact that the smaller of the dangerous game cartridges may also be conditioned for use here once good reason has been established elsewhere - Gloucestershire read that as .416, but not .458.

The next step is to ask for the .375 Win for boar. They put AOLQ on everything anyway so the whole system is a farce. I could literally shoot a mouse with my .416 Rigby. :cuckoo:
So you can shoot deer with your 416 Rigby then?

Its common practice in most areas to have wording to suit that or make it clear what you can do with such a rifle. Printed onto your FAC. I have seen this on large calibre range shooting guns and Big game guns . AOLQ i recon is the exception rather than the rule with the big boom sticks

Why not?
If your good reason really is genuine, and you're not prohibited from holding firearms, it can't really be refused.
There is the theory and the practice ! What will often occur is they push you right to the court steps , then settle as you walk in as they cannot afford to loose and set a president via a court ruling . How long can you wait ? How much can you spend ? Your taking them remember they have no fees .
If they want to firearms licencing can really make things difficult and expensive for the applicant

Can do. I've taken it out on a few stalks but haven't been successful with it yet. Hopefully I can change that in the coming year.

After a good long chat with my feo, he agreed that getting good familiarity with the rifle is essential for its intended use. You don't want to be fumbling about under the pressure if your buffalo stands back up again! Taking it for a wander in the woods is great practice for snap shooting at relatively close range.

Interestingly, my initial request was for a 458 Lott. It was granted, but only for range use. I put forward my argument about the field use and was basically told that the biggest cartridge the force was willing to grant was 416, so I did a variation and went for that. Having learned my level of recoil tolerance, I'm not sure how I'd have got on with the Lott.
