Multiple rifles for deer, good reasoning ?

Why waste more good money on more rifles you don’t need?

from what I’m reading you already have 2 too many as it is!

Understandably, if you’re a professional, do you need 2 rifles, if you’re a recreational only going out, maybe once a week or less you only need one rifle!

I personally had one rifle, and I shot that for 15 years, averaging, 220 outings a year killing 150 to 180 deer year!
**** me, another post telling the massive how many deer you shoot. If the man can get it past licensing, who cares. Nothing to do with me.

It’s the same argument “ You only need one fishing rod” there is some truth in it but most of us want to own a few rifles and more than a few fishing rods, takes all sorts

You’re a fortunate man, that’s a fine figger of a woman.
Does she have a broad minded sister?
Indeed so though more recently the beard has gone.
Sister you say? This could be your lucky day! Sadly she was tragically widowed a few years back - her late hubbie was found with 18 bullet holes in his back, the coroner (by coincidence her long-standing boyfriend) recorded it as the worst case of suicide he had ever encountered. Oddly he disappeared not long after that……
As a gesture so common amongst SD types I attach a photograph, though in fairness it was taken a few years back just before she ran off moved to the South and her looks may have faded a little…..
If still interested PM me your telephone number.

Hi,

Reading the thread regarding the 30-06 being to powerful and the associated Good Reason etc has got me wondering and hence not wanting to hijack that thread.

I have been thinking of putting in for a variation for a 7mm-08 but am concerned about my Good Reason. I know there is only one way to find out for sure but thought I would seek some advice 1st.

I currently have the following conditioned for deer.
.243win
6.5x55 SE
.308 Win.

Reasons.
1) I do not want only 1 deer calibre ready at any one time. As things have and do happen so a 2nd back up rifle ready to go is a good to have. Plus the farmer isn't interested if I can't get out as I have a rifle issue.

2) The .243 is used for fox now, albeit in conjunction with another .22CF.

3) 6.5x55 has a thermal scope ( without going into my main reason but an additional factor for having is. in some area's the deer consistently enter / leave the land the last 15 mins or less of legal shooting window) This allows me to confidently take shots in the last knockings when the bucks and does are both in season. Not comfortable using it when Bucks only in case I get the sex wrong. Therefore only used Nov - March.

4) .308win used Bucks only and proper stalking / small woodland as opposed to just high seat/ static. Relatively light weight, 20" barrel. In truth I find the recoil at times not ideal. A wuss, I know but still very effective even with me behind it.

5) Although brought on by myself. I don't currently fulfil reason 1 as 6.5 not used this time of year and .243 set up for longer range fox or the seemingly endless windy conditions so only down to the .308 good to go.

7mm-08 hope to have less recoil and allow for longer high seat work as and when the (fallow) deer are out in the open in big groups at certain times of the year. Plus a back up rifle

Just reasoning ?? or full of -----

thanks
In my opinion you will struggle to justify obtaining another deer calibre rated rifle. Licensing departments are are becoming more stringent when it comes to good reason. The days of having 5 to 8 deer calibres are going and if you fancy a new calibre you most certainly have to move one on. You're argument re the 7mm will not cut it less recoil high seat etc is not good reason. You have plenty of back up rifles if you're desperate for the 7mm get rid of two others. Imagine if you come up against an feo who is an expirenced deer/vermin controller you're argument will fail. However shy bairns get nowt and your licensing department may not have an issue. I doubt it as there are new guidance in the pipeline there a few recommendations that will also need to be installed into the firearms licensing act. Good luck

I have gone from 8 - 2 in under a week, got rid of everything I didn’t need or didn’t shoot.
Oh, So why didn't you say fright from the start. Take it from someone thats been there and done that already ?

I mean this in the nicest possible way and it has made me chuckle. looking back at your replies it reminds me of aspects of a reformed smoker. Been there done that.
Funny how you settled on a 7x57, as I said that was my initial choice on a 7mm. However as far as I can tell a 7mm08 is the modern equivalent and easier to obtain new.
So I am just possibly later on my journey to discover that ideal cartridge for me and may end up with just 2 and suspect it would be the 6.5 which would go. As for the .243, as long as it lasts but its got a fair shot count now anyway.

Imagine if you come up against an feo who is an expirenced deer/vermin controller you're argument will fail.

Thank you. Exactly the reason for the post.

Thanks all, some good replies that made me laugh especially so after a few beer late last night.

Um, I have 6 Deer conditioned rifles and have just had renewal

Um, I have 6 Deer conditioned rifles and have just had renewal
Exactly.

I’ve got .25-06, .300wm, .45-70 and 6.5 creed, all deer conditioned.

I’ve also got .222 for deer and fox, .22 hornet for vermin and a couple of .22s also for vermin.

All fully open, all also conditioned for target use as well.

If you want a new rifle then put in the request for it and have the discussion if you need to when it’s raised.

I know a bunch of people with well over 20 rifles, and if you want them and can justify it on application then crack on 👍🏻👍🏻

Which round are you using in the .270?
Why so surprised?

With a 270 it’s one calibre does all jobs, the need for multiple calibres is completely and utterly irrelevant!

Pick one and buy and one end of subject, you do not need multiple calibres to do one job if you are of the recreational stalker if you are professional/semiprofessional you will need to rifles one as a back up!

Oh, it comes down to is this, I legally can,
so I will practicality in the financial side of things, just go all out of the window!

Personally I do not belong to that, I’ve got loads of guns I’m gonna **** over them regularly club, like I said before everything, I have a practical, nothing more nothing less is there to do a job, not sit there and get looked at.
