Need a dedicated Foxing rifle .223

As title says I am in need of a foxing rifle, looking for something nice on the eye, I like the look of an anschutz 1771 or Merkel helix explorer or a Sauer.

Not a fan of tikka or Howa so not looking for info on those.

Anyone use either of the above rifles in .223 and if so how are they.

Have you considered the Schultz & Larsen Legacy? It’s a genuine mini action, switch barrel rifle with two twist rates available in .223. It’s a pleasure to carry and more accurate than I am.

Had a Sauer 100 in 223 for about 4 years now and I don’t think I’d buy another one. Really good rifle just let down by the magazine. The 223 wears the lips of the plastic magazine then jams when feeding rounds into the chamber. I’ve had 2 new magazines for it already. Think it needs a magazine with steel lips like the .222/.223 tikkas but nobody makes such a thing.

Thanks for that advice.

Lovely rifle, bolt is unbelievably smooth, nice trigger etc. magazine is pretty awful both in terms of loading and feeding.

I know you said your not a Tikka fan but there is a lot to like about the 223 CTR model which has an all metal magazine, mid weight barrel that comes in an 8:1 twist and shoots like a laser straight out of the box. I used one for a while when Blaser was being worked on and it has to be the only gun I regret selling.

I have never heard of a vartarg, what's the ammo cost.
Sadly reloading where I am is not really an option.
Vartarg home loading only as it's a wildcat cartridge. The sako85 is available in quicker twist rate for heavier bullets. But I only use nosler 50g ballistic tip bullets. And it kills foxes easily.

Genuine question. Why would you load a 20cal rifle with a 50grain bullet. The vartarg is a necked down 223? Seems a lot of hassle to shoot a 50grain vmax why not just use a 223?
