Welcome to the 7-08 club. Keep stum about the carsburg of cartridges. Don’t want the rif raf to know about it.I rebarreled my 243 to 7mm 08 for the reasons you suggest. It works very well....

Indeed I may have seen her in Cold Lake waiting tables incognitoI believe that the regs state a minimum of 20mm Vulcan for T-Rex , I may be wrong , it's been a while since I've stalked large carnivorous dinosaurs ................ the waitress in Ft MacMurray not withstanding............. she was more of a Sasquatch .

It’s no metropolis like manning though ....Cold Lake ! , you know of which I speak . Compared to Ft. Crack , it's the cultural high light of northern Alberta lol .

As somone who shoots 6.5x55 & Creedmoor they are 6 of 1 and half a dozen of the other, nothing in it at all.... the x55 is certainly not a relicIf you want to be really trendy, 6mm Creedmoor (modern .243? but good luck getting factory ammo!).
If you want to be boring (but effective), .270 Winchester.
A .308 is fine but if you really want a 6.5 then it pains me to say get a Creedmoor, the 6.5 Swede is a relic.
Yes it is.
He still hasn’t been back you know![]()
The Gentleman’s stalking rifle was the 275 Rigby, 256 Mannlicher, or a 300 H&H. The stalker used a .303. When the 303 and 256 Mannlicher where made obsolete by min 2450 fps rule, the 270 became the go to calibre.
As long as you don't get a magnum you will be fine. 6.5 x 55 or 308 in my bookHi all. I have been stalking with a .243 for a long time, and have found it to be a fantastic calibre throughout, having taken many highland red stags to roe does, with fantastic results. I am now considering a new rifle with better long distance ballistics, more suited to consistent highland stalking and would like some comments / views. I am currently considering 6.5 x 55 or .308. Realstically i will not be shooting beyond 200m - 250m (absolute max) highland open hill stag and hinds. Any comments and useful advise to best calibres would be much apreciated. Appreciate this could be an opinionated question, though i am open to all views.
Hi! Not sure of how popular the 7x64 is in the UK , but this great caliber is really experiencing a new renaissance in Italy.
I myself hunt with it for 14 years and have been appreciating its accuracy, versatility and knockdown power. Very flexible from 120 to 180gn. Huge selection of commercial rounds and mostly not a boring cartridge!
