New Highland Calibre - What to go For

I believe that the regs state a minimum of 20mm Vulcan for T-Rex , I may be wrong , it's been a while since I've stalked large carnivorous dinosaurs ................ the waitress in Ft MacMurray not withstanding............. she was more of a Sasquatch .

AB
Indeed I may have seen her in Cold Lake waiting tables incognito

The Gentleman’s stalking rifle was the 275 Rigby, 256 Mannlicher, or a 300 H&H. The stalker used a .303. When the 303 and 256 Mannlicher where made obsolete by min 2450 fps rule, the 270 became the go to calibre.

Nowadays look more at a rifle that you like and as long as its any one of 25-06 up to 300 win mag and you sight it an inch and a bit high at 100, any deer will be dead from a centre of shoulder shot out to 250.

And with modern optics you can them quite a bit further if you need or want.

If you want to be really trendy, 6mm Creedmoor (modern .243? but good luck getting factory ammo!).

If you want to be boring (but effective), .270 Winchester.

A .308 is fine but if you really want a 6.5 then it pains me to say get a Creedmoor, the 6.5 Swede is a relic.
As somone who shoots 6.5x55 & Creedmoor they are 6 of 1 and half a dozen of the other, nothing in it at all.... the x55 is certainly not a relic

My advice would be to get a 30 cal either .308 or 30-06. The .243 can be retained for fox, Muntjac, CWD and Roe the 30 cal for larger beasts and at distance. The 30-06 would also be capable on Boar or African Plains game if you ever get the chance. Just my two peneth, I've got 243 308 and 30-06 and hand load for them all getting really good results. I skipped over the 6.5 swede or creedmore because the 243 and the 30 cal have it covered.

Let’s say find a rifle that’s a good fit then choose a calibre that’s legal for hill stalking and there is easy access to ammo or if you homeload write the calibr you fancy on little bits of paper fold them up put them in a hat and buy the first one you pull out or the last for more fun.

I love a caliber thread haha!

I've not been stalking deer decades or anything but I've shot them with .308, .25-06 and .300WM - all three killed the targeted animal.

What I would say is if you have an itch for a particular cartridge then scratch it. That was me and .300 WM - I'd seen a load of YT videos of people hunting in Africa with it, in the highlands and what not, plus it just looks like a "proper" cartridge (and its got magnum written on it which CLEARLY just means its better ;)) so I bought one. Love it, would never sell it and if I could only keep one rifle it would be that one because it wont limit me and I can load it up to full power or down to .308 power.

Equally I love .25-06 to pieces - shot my first deer with one, shoots flat, very light recoil, rolls them over easy... Arguably the perfect all rounder for UK deer.

Now I have a hankering for 6.5x55 (and indeed a .458WM, amongst others) .... Its true what they say, the best cartridge is the one you dont own yet!

Joking aside, they will all do the job (yes even the .243) so I would say get the one you fancy the most.

Whenever I pack for stalking on the hill or where extended distances are likely my hand bypasses the 6.5 and 308 and comes to rest firmly on the barrel of the 7mm Rem Mag. To call it a Magnum is stretching it a bit but it is comfortable to shoot with mild recoil, carry’s well, shoots flat and drops pretty much everything where it stands with greater authority than the 308 or 6.5. Ammo is available as well if handloading isn’t an option.

I'd add .240 Apex (aka .240 Holland and Holland) to that list. Indeed it's the reason so it is said for the use of ".240" being in the subsequent deer legislation. And, in fact, the 2,450 fps rule again was tailored to allow specifically the .303 with the 174 grain bullet to be continued to be used.

Hi all. I have been stalking with a .243 for a long time, and have found it to be a fantastic calibre throughout, having taken many highland red stags to roe does, with fantastic results. I am now considering a new rifle with better long distance ballistics, more suited to consistent highland stalking and would like some comments / views. I am currently considering 6.5 x 55 or .308. Realstically i will not be shooting beyond 200m - 250m (absolute max) highland open hill stag and hinds. Any comments and useful advise to best calibres would be much apreciated. Appreciate this could be an opinionated question, though i am open to all views.
As long as you don't get a magnum you will be fine. 6.5 x 55 or 308 in my book

Hi! Not sure of how popular the 7x64 is in the UK , but this great caliber is really experiencing a new renaissance in Italy.

I myself hunt with it for 14 years and have been appreciating its accuracy, versatility and knockdown power. Very flexible from 120 to 180gn. Huge selection of commercial rounds and mostly not a boring cartridge!

For what it is worth, I am really beginning to take to the 7x64 for the big Fallow bucks we have in the South of England.
