Hi gents just wanted an opinion on something I've just returned to the uk and an in the process of getting my fac back, in the past I've had several calibres ( .303, 6.5 x 55, 233, 30 06 etc ) but I'm thinking of applying for one calibre to cover me for foxes boar and deer ( I'll have a .22 for rabbits as well) I'mThinking of a 7mm 08 my real question is do younthinknswapping and changing between guns makes us poorer shots as we never truly get the feel for any one rifle?

It hasn't been my experience.~Muir

You can only shoot one rifle at a time so why have more?

so you are prepared for when the zombies come (read: "devolved Scottish Parliament"!)

I have different ones as they do different things in different places
granted a .270 will dispatch a fox but the people living round the golf course I shoot on may get upset!

my personal opinion is that people have far too many rifles,Iam a great believer in that the less you swop and change the better you become with one item, for this reason I only own 3 rifles
1.rimmy (evetyone should own one)
2.foxing rifle
3.deer/boar/afrian plains game

both number 1 and 2 rifle are identical even down to trigger pull only difference is caliber and scope type.by only having 2 working rifles I can put the best glass on top and be perfectly happy to know how they both perform perfectly.

I only have the 6.5x55, but am as good as I'll ever be with it and that's all the comfort that I need when anything that I want to shoot in the UK is in the crosshairs...

Cheers

+1 for the idea of see it, shoot it.
one rifle for fox and one for deer/boar. I do not believe in the idea of one rifle from fox to large stags.
- 223
- 30-06 , 308 , 7x64 , 270

what if you shoot two or more kinds of deer/boar/game which could be as much as 15-20stone difference?
I dont want to whack one with 180-200gr thumpers or risk shooting them with 85gr screamers

selection of rimfires - silent and HV for totally different scenarios
.222 foxes close to urban/residential areas
.243 fox and deer
.270 big deer (we wont go into the shooting of red stags with the .243 arguement...)

personally I use a .22lr for rooks, rabbits, squirrels, and practice shooting

I use a .223 for fox and roe

I use a .243 for roe and doubles as a guest rifle for reds

I use a 30-06 for reds and bigger/other large game.

I could probably live happily with just the .243 though, but if I had to pick two, it would be the .223 and the 30-06 as a pair.

oh, the 6.5x55 does stretch its legs on red stags, but only when I don't feel like taking the physical abuse of the '06. Usually if feeling sluggish or hung over.

9.3STarted off with a .22. Then went straight for a 300 WIn Mag. Got the following in particulart order, .222, .223, .22-250, .243, 6.5*57, .308, 9.3*62, .375H&H and Blaser 30R..........mostly stick with 3ooWin Mag and .308 for most deer stalking applications.

Agree, but I seem to spend a lot of time getting one or other rifle tweaked. I've slowly reached the conclusion that for my needs, two red deer legal rifles is ideally where I want to be at. Unfortunately it's still work in progress. Regards JCS
