Private plates are a bit of fun and can be an investment at he higher end (low number of characters). All of the dealers who sell plates will handle the transfer process for you but it is easy and DVLC give good instructions online. Be careful if buying a plate directly from another individual, I would recommend an escrow process.
Make sure you negotiate on price, often the same plate will be listed on numerous websites at different prices, this is often due to different margins applied by trade sellers. You can also hold plates on a certificate rather than on a vehicle but you do have to pay a small renew fee every 10 years. I own a 3 digit plate that is now worth a lot of money and worth at least 2-3 times the value of my vehicle. Some plates have increased in value considerably over the last few decades. To me you just have to look at it as a bit of fun. I told my son that I need a grandson with the same first initial to pass it down to ....lol
Good luck finding an interesting plate that means something to you.
