Puppy insurance

I meant to post a while back but forgot.

I got a puppy in mid February, it came with 5 weeks free insurance from kennel club. When it ran out, they asked me if I wanted to renew. It was £50 a month!! Man alive. That’s three times my car insurance. £600 a year for 12-15 years. That’s £7200-£9000! I’ve not spent that much in vets bills in four dogs.

Is it reasonably priced anywhere? I could probably stomach £20 a month or so.

Yeah, the 5 free weeks is good I guess, had it with my last two dogs. But obviously they hope that you'll continue on with it.

But you're right, the cost is very high. Obviously they will be pulling in more money than they are paying out in vet bills though, so it makes financial sense to NOT have pet insurance. The likelihood is that in the long run you will come out on top. But it is a gamble. You need to have some idea what you'll do if things go wrong and there's the possibility of a major vets bill on the horizon.

Me? All my dogs are/have been family members and I would make a decision based on that and of course quality of life. But some would see it as purely a financial thing. Do you spend £2k on a major operation on a 6 year old working dog when he won't be the same again and anyway only probably has 2-4 years working life left tops, when you can buy a puppy for that money? Some would think like that.

Over the years, I've always found dog insurance expensive and they are quick to exclude things that your dog suffers from. And in later life, when you perhaps need to use it more, it costs more! And there's always an excess that means you end up paying for most minor things anyway.
