Was ip in D&G last week, just back today. Beginning of last week was very active, lots of roaring, chasing etc. From Wednesday onwards it had all but stopped. Guide says I was a week too late, but that it usually picks back up again in a week or so.

That sounds about correct for us too homer by Wednesday It had almost entirely dropped off, today was the first proper activate day with roars hours after sunrise I even seen a stag and a group of hinds on the move 30+ minutes after sunrise, roars across the river sounded more promising and they all shut up around 8:30 except the one we were hearing across the river in the wood still screaming Its nuts off (directly down wind, 30ft down next too a river, in the treeline, no thanks!)

Even with setting out at 6:20~ and arriving for 6:40s you can see the deer through the binos In the field jumping into the wood, the stag however today I reckon had either just jumped into the wood or was still out in the field so Its getting better much better than the one hind and one calf on Friday morning and the one singular roar from that tree line.

Tried calling the big boy out the wood, but Its hard pulling a stag off hinds tbh

For us last time we went out in the evening? (earlier this week) It was pretty much bang on 7pm we would start to get roars, I'm *hoping* that will change now.

It’s quite simple really then isn’t it?

Don’t belittle people just because their ideas are different to yours, I’ve also busted my bollocks humping reds, I use a quad and trailer probably the same as what you do but I’ll have no qualms about using a skateboard if I need to it also works and works well!

Like I said work smart not hard, and any idea or tall that makes working smarter even easier no brainer in my opinion

It's not smart and it's damn right harder to move some that has no steering.
Shunting something with weight to point it in the right direction is for divis.
If you like the idea use it..
But someone with experience can obviously see holes in your game that just need improving on.

Spent a magical last stalk yesterday evening overlooking a glade with roaring to the left, directly in front on me down by the river, and off to my left. Started around 18:00 and was over by 18:45 - none of my feeble calls enticed any response. As I ventured out to load up the car this morning at 06:00, roars were on the wind. Magical week stalking, watching and listening to the beasts in the forests above Loch Rannoch.

I see all this talk of Red rut , and I look back in my mind‘s eye of the stags that have come and gone, my personal stag has been long gone many years, I’m very privileged to have shot a stag over 10 years old and measured bronze medal with the head cut short probably would’ve gone silver but that’s my memory. The taxidermy is long gone!

I saw a stag 5/6 or seven years ago that I estimated to be almost 15 years old massive massive beams with brow and a half cock Crown at the top beams thicker than your upper arm a nice wore blind if I was privileged enough to shoot that stag I would quit!!!!!

Never did see him again probably long gone, that’s why nowadays it’s all about shooting the crap and letting the good stuff roll on

Hope you don't mind me jumping on this thread with a question: out stalking this morning. Spotted a couple of hinds with the thermal through a thicket and down across a small narrow valley. Suddenly heard a stag roar from beyond them it seemed, pause and then some crashing towards us whilst grunting. Couldn't see anything and the stag sounded as if he turned off! It was so sudden that it put the wind up us a bit. I wondered if anyone had had experience of being charged by a stag in the rut? During the day they'll do anything to clear out of the way and will run away even at a good sized distance but either first thing in the morning or last light they seem to be much more aggressive on this particular patch of ground.

Had a stag close a 100 m in cover to 10 feet in front full hoof scraping head nod in etc gap, to which I told my friend of that takes half a step closer shoot it!

To which it did and he did, proper yer pants stuff, rutting stags have been some of my most exciting stalking memories.

Yup, had one charge in from a kilometre last week - watched him for most of that way, then he disappeared, only to reappear around the corner of a wood block charging at me. When he next stopped to roar, he hit the ground. My stalking companion dropped a royal that day too which was also intent in doing battle with him. In the midst of the rut, their gonads overrule their brains!

My pal shot one last month at last light, he was stood covering a field of an couple of acres within a forest, the big stag appeared, saw him and ran towards him from 80 to 20 yards whilst snorting like a raging bull, then it turned and walked back 40 yards presenting a shot.

My pal took the shot, he said when the stag was moving toward him snorting he was getting a bit uneasy!

Although it was few years ago, this wee beastie was quite determined to see me off his patch - luckily for him I only had my fishing rod in hand and thought retreat was the wisest move, but he wasn't for backing down and got to 13 feet of me......(the length of my Salmon rod!)

Even hoisting it into trailer/quad was horrendous with another person.

Went no more than 5 yards with the .243

Spent 8am-11am then 1pm-3pm cutting it up..... have I mentioned its still quartered and we still have an entire other day at butchering so we can get out next week too shoot more?

We just got home from seeing what was about and tonight was the first since the 6th where there wasn't a roar to be heard, nicely though there's a stag and a few hinds in this very spot I shot this one at.

Try deer in trailer, follow landrover on quad so much easier

You need ramps not lifting. Drag them up the tailboard of a trailer. Trying to lift them into a pickup, Land Rover or even into a trailer is a quick way to popping your tripe out.
