Remington 700- talk to me

Im contemplating a new rifle for foxing probably in 22-250.
Ideally I would’ve gone down a full custom route however when I looked into it it was going to cost just shy of £6000 which I cannot justify. I currently have a Sako 85 .223 which I absolutely love, however on this new rifle I would like to add a custom chassis/accuracy international stock. Why I’m looking at the Remmy 700. Am I going to be disappointed with comparison of the sako, or is it just as good?

If you're looking at putting it into an aftermarket chassis.. maybe consider waiting until February (ish) where I'm led to believe Edgar Brothers will be bringing the first Bergara B14 Barrelled actions into the UK.

Skips out the trying to find the right profile/length etc

Unknown on how they will compare to the Sako action.

Were you going to have a spare barrel supplied with the full custom (two barrels) for the price quoted ?

I hear some nightmare pricing coming through these days

Tikka T3 as a base has numerous decent chassis and aftermarket stocks available

They shoot equally as well as any custom

Rem 700 has some issues which can be a pig to rectify for the unwary

Roger at South Yorks Shooting still has loads of Remmy actions, rifles, stocks etc. I’m sure he’ll do you a good deal as he moves into semi retirement!

Remmy actions are just as capable as any other mass produced factory action. I have 5 of them and they all shoot extremely well. Not as slick as my Tikka’s but solid and dependable. If you get a good deal on one go for it.

To be fair, the custom route I looked at was a carbon barrel, new mdt carbon stock. Trigger tech trigger…… all pricey components, hence why I’m now looking at factory. The reason I ask about the 700 is that I have seen one for sale in an accuracy international stock. These decisions are never easy.

I have both the sako 85 and a rem 700, both are accurate, reliable and so the job but the sako is just made that little bit better.

Plenty of used custom rifles for sale on various sites

Surgeon, Borden, Barnard - all available at reasonable prices and are quality products

The best rifle I've used professionally was a Remington 700, 270. Used it for 10 years before it was shot out. Wanted to re-barrel it bit bosses wouldnt allow it.

Best rifle I have used recreationallly is a Remington 700 sendero. It was a 25-06 and is now a 6.5-284. I have a jewell trigger on it.

I have a sako 85. Have have also had a 75, and several other makes but still prefer the 700

The AI stocks are heavy mind

I have owned a 700 SPS in 308 for 15 years and it’s a good accurate rifle.
Initially I had it in an aics chassis and it was great on the range if a bit heavy for stalking.
Them I cut 10” off the barrel and dropped it into an MDT Oryx stock and it’s now my woodland rifle.
For the money it’s a solid rifle and will give you lots of options for aftermarket bling, but if I had one gripe then it’s that the bolt handle isn’t the best and is close to the scope mounts when open so not the easiest to cycle fast, but the bolt handle can be changed quite easily.

I have a semi custom Remmy .243 in a KKC stock.Rifle basics trigger and it is a very accurate weapon. I also have a custom .223 built on a R700 action in a ACIS stock GC2 match trigger. . V heavy so range and gongs use. I have another .243 in a GRS Berserk stock. Overall I prefer the KKC.
