Good afternoon all.
I'm just curious did you listen to his conference speech today?

caught a bit on talk radio when i drove somewhere , something about increasing the smoking age by a year every year until it's impossible to smoke , not somehting the government should be interferring with in my opinion , pleanty of real issues to deal with before they start removing personal liberties

Don’t bother voting as really cannot be bothered due to state of nation and mind set of majority and where everything is heading in general regardless who lies to us for our own good.
Did tick “ no” box on here and would not waste one second of my remaining brain cells on any thought, might have a watch if some decent Totty turned up and no other reason.

And where's the shortfall, so just a tad over the £284 raised in VED per household), in the £10 Billion from smoking taxes going to be made up from?

Vehicle Excise Duty (the old tax disc) by comparison raises about £8 Billion.

UK Office for Budget Responsibility figures:

We forecast that VED will raise £8.0 billion in 2023-24. That represents 0.7 per cent of all receipts and is equivalent to around £284 per household and 0.3 per cent of national income.

Now some might say, well it'll save the NHS far more than it raises if smoking is banned? Not according to this from "Action on Smoking and Health" figures:

Smoking is estimated to cost the NHS £2.5 billion every year, equivalent to 2% of the health service's budget.

Or if you don't agree here's the NHS's own figures from "NHS England".

It is estimated that smoking has cost the NHS in England £2.6 billion per year.

Any govt is going to have to think very hard about how to fix the vat and duty hole left when all these things like fags and icu cars are banned.
The amount lost through vehicle fuel alone will be vast, let alone everything else.
How do you recover it? Put up car tax massively? That hits poor drivers more than rich ones!
Make electricity more expensive? Well that penalises those on low incomes or without a car (or both) excessively!

And then what do they do if we all install solar panels and solar batteries and consume less power produced on the grid - apply a solar panel tax?? Like being back in the Middle Ages with window taxes!!

No easy solutions here - you can’t tax the crap out of everything else just because you lose revenue from one sector.

Huge headache that no one is even raising ideas to solve, let alone real world solutions .

No. All politicians are interested in is their ego first, wallet second and the electorate a very distant third, until they're needed to keep them on the gravy train for another term.

Not interested

I'll not be voting this time around

Parliament showed its true colours, and what it really believes about democracy with their appalling behaviour trying to prevent Brexit

I no longer believe that sending a 'representative' to London is in fact sending someone there to represent

It looks like Labor will inherit the mantle next time around - unless of course if they start talking about their intended policies - that might lose them the race in the last leg

Normally Labor inherit a reasonable economy and proceed to stuff it up - handing it back once it is again broken

This time they will inherit an absolute dog's breakfast

I'll be fascinated to see just what a disaster they can create this time around

If you - as do I - think that the Conservatives have proved utterly incompetent - that is nothing compared to what the other lot will do - they are the true masters of incompetence and this time they have the bandwagon of a new Env cult to ride

Exactly that:
1. Determine how many miles per annum the average Motorist travels.
2. Determine how many litres of fuel that “average” Motorist purchases per annum.
3. Calculate the per annum figure recovered as tax from that average Motorist.
4. Charge all Motorists that figure to keep their electric or hydrogen powered car on the road for 12-months.

Shortfall in fossil fuel Duty revenue sorted.

No, but I have seen some clips on Social Media since..

Talking about their only being two genders etc.. I mean yes.. but if that's what you're counting on for voted then no wonder our economy is down the Pan.

That being said.. anything would be better than the slime ball Starmer as PM.

Yup, that fixes one problem, but how do you scale the cost depending on road use?

At the moment someone driving an older small car with a tiny engine who covers a modest amount of miles per year will pay a modest amount of tax both for VED and at the pump. If you apply a blanket fee for electric cars and you have someone doing likewise with a small electric vehicle then they get disproportionately hammered. Unless you link it to mileage, but then you need to know exactly how many miles everyone drives and that means good old big bro having access to your activities, and I’m not entirely sure that people would like that.

It’s a real tough nut to crack as you can’t suddenly make lower earners who need cars unable to afford them esp in rural areas as how do they then get to work?

Disproportionate taxation is the real risk here and I haven’t heard anyone come up with anything that will truly work. Yet!
