Running when shot

I am on the side of the adrenalin junkies. I believe that if a deer is half aware that something is amiss then the old fight or flight routine swings into action automatically. It has always seemed to me that if you can get close to an animal that has no clue as to your being there, then a well placed shot will put it down there or within a very short distance. However an animal that is on red alert, or even amber alert, when hit with an equally well placed shot will be off and running. Everyone except the adrenalin driven beast knows that it is dead, and when it finally runs out of oxygen and impetus it goes down, trouble is the bugger can be deep in a plantation by then.

All the animals system knows is that it has to run, and knowing nothing about ballistics it cares not what it was shot with. Just my thoughts.

PS adrenalin and excitement can cause all sorts of mishaps, you could even be on the wrong thread, couldn't you malc?

Bugger, I knew I was in for a pasteing from you lot

Mr B I do not mind the purple tablets, and I certainly dont mind the two bottles of Glenfidich. But I refuse to have you administer the drugs to me. The though of 6ft2" ex matlo dressed in a nurses uniform is too much to bare

And dont go bringing it up to Scotland when you come up either  Errr thats the uniform not the whisky, me, Smithy and JAYB will take care of that for you.

Thank you all for the advice I shall be more careful next time, or maybe not. Depends what I am up to

He who dares Rodney, he who dares.

cooshti Malc my son, cooshti.

I'd love to see nurse boogie street, er I mean Beowulf in full mess kit, a well run Sika in amongst the pines and he will have earned his medicine.

John

Hey JAYB I suppose we could always tie Mr B to a tree with the nurses uniform on covered in that doe scent they sell in the states and see if any bucks come out to play.

As long as we shoot them before they get to him he should be safe, lets say20yds should do it.

Thats it for me this thread is getting bizzare.

shooting

I have had a number of roe run on when shot well (heart) with 95 grain nosler balistic tips.

I have also had roe not hit in the heart but just the lungs seam like they were completely poleaxed. There does not always seam to be any rhyme or reason to it but many of the beasts that ran were aware somthing was amiss and most of the beasts that didn't run had no idea that anything was wrong.

Sika, try a bottle of Lagavulin. Get the shot placement right with that and you'll go nowhere, I promise.

Single malt

I am not wasting a good single malt of that calibre on Mr B, and I think I speak for JAYB as well. Well at least not while he is tied to the tree, maybe later in the evening. (Hmmm he is a big lad might have a problem there, NO we will get him drunk first) 8)

Nooooooooooo some of that old rough stuff, Canadian whisky, you know the stuff that strips the varnish off your best mates coffee table. He can use it as a midge repellant, or we can fill the quad up with it to drive the beasts back once we have them in the bag.

Whatever, I am looking forward to having them stay with me in Scotland, it should be a good week, and I am sure they will let you know what went on

I think Smithy and me are like a couple of of excited kids in a sweety shop! Can't wait, counting down the days!!
I'm working fifteen hour days at work at the moment so I will be ready for some 'RNR'.
Speaking of which, I had better go to work!!

To continue the debate - have a read of this article in Rifle Shooter - albeit American and talking about African game animals.

http://www.rifleshootermag.com/shooting_tips/tracks_091907/

Suggesting that most animals if shot with heart / lung shot will run 50 yds. More luck or the shot going high thus hitting spinal column that causes them to drop instantly, or taking out both shoulders meaning that they can't run which cause them to drop.
