Sako Quad Synthetic a

What are your thoughts (from owners of) Sako Quad Synthetic and realistically how convenient is it to switch between 17 and 22 of whichever flavour?

What options do people choose and why?

I need to replace a semi auto 22 and want a good bolt action - reliable, accurate, ergonomic.

Thanks for advice

As a rifle, the Sako Quad is excellent. I've got a synthetic stocked version in .17hmr. They're as good as or better than any other similar rifle.

The swap-ability of the barrels is another matter. Originally, you were able to get a scope (can't bring to mind what make it was just now) where it supposedly did away with the need to zero every time you swapped barrels and it was all thought to be a jolly good idea. In practice, most people found it a chore to keep changing their barrels and magazines every time they wanted to change calibres. So a lot of people simply got another rifle to cut out all the faffing around. They then just had to grab the rifle of choice from the cabinet. I understand that was one reason they discontinued them and re-invented the Finnfire.

If you are short of room or for some other reason need a Quad with two calibres of choice, fear not, they are a good rifle. But I'd worry about the zero and probably, like many, I'd end up just using the barrel that was on it. My advice would be to get two rifles, even if you get one now and save up for the next one.

Just put a rail on and use qd scope mounts and you’ll have no problem with losing zero, that’s what I do, with the three barrels I have
This is good advice, because, to change the barrels, you need to slacken off the locking bolt, and then lift the barrel out of the stock. So a scope that is mounted very low will prevent you doing this without QD.

I have a Quad with 22LR and WMR barrels, and its a good rifle. I dont tend to swap barrels regularly, but when I know that I need the WMR for longer range stuff (foxes etc). It stays on for a few days (or, in Lockdown, weeks!). When I put the 22LR barrel back on I did a quick zero check, just in case.

My next purchase will be a 17HMR barrel: it’s massively more convenient to have 2 spare barrels than three all-up rifles in the cabinet!

The scope that @Pedro alluded to in his earlier post was the Burris Quad. It was, ermmm, shockingly bad.
I was very nearly seduced by the sales patter when i bought my quad (17 and 22), but in the end went for a second hand dialable Bushnell Elite. a wee dab of coloured paint on the turret (for given zero) to match the barrel bands and it worked a treat.
As @09mutley05 says, a rail and QD mounts are the way to go.

I have 22lr, 17hmr and 22Wmr barrels I fitted a rail and have a scope for each barrel and QD mounts works for me. Very accurate.Converted an old guardian gun case for the rifle waiting to find a cheap guardian cartridge magazine for the scopes

only ever known of one my friend had and it was a true dog, never reliable , jammed and miss fires and no were near as accurate as a CZ 22. It may have been a one off but you only get one chance at a first impression.
