The government and the country side agencies tell us to shoot more Deer . I have just heard off the Game dealer he will only be buying Roe for the the foreseeable future due to high stocks ! How do we dispose of the Muntjac and Fallow ?Its a sad state of affairs when a premium product like Venison doesn't command a price . Before people say eat them yourself ,we shoot 200 deer a year so cant eat them all at home.

I hear you but the season is coming to an end for fallow and munties so hopefully the dealers will be buying again before the season starts again. Dealers never really wanted munties anyway.

Have you tried "Give up the Game" on Facebook ?? There seems to be a lot moved around on there. I wish I had that number of Muntjac in my part of the Midlands !!

Perhaps one partial solution is for people who let out stalking to allow people to take the carcase home (or even insisting on it) rather than charging for the walk, the shot and then the carcase at "game dealer's rates"! If the OP is to believed game dealer's rates are zero so why the charge?

David.

I have always thought this should happen anyway. I give them away too 👍

When I grew up in the 1980’s and 90’s in Southern England deer were pretty much un heard off. Deer occured in Scotland, with a few deer parks in England holding fallow deer. And Roe were few and far between.

The same can be said about many bird species such as Red Kites and Buzzards, otters, badgers etc

We now have otters in every county of the UK, red kites, buzzards and badgers are very widespread and these are all hailed as huge wins for conservation.

Yet deer numbers have grown and they are again widespread, yet they are demonised by conservationists and government.

Take a video of those you can’t get a buyer for going into a municipal incinerator or an on-site pit and then send it to the BBC, along with an explanatory note that makes clear the reason for such a criminal waste of protein.

Everyone I know who contributed to the DEFRA consultation on deer numbers mentioned the need for considered and Government funded support mechanisms for carcass disposal. But what has this consultation delivered beyond reinforcing the need to cull far more deer?

There are still allowances on the table for mobile chillers and training sponsored by the government
It’s not the answer but it’s a help for people to advance in supplying deer and getting a supply line going

The problem is an economic one, we dont live in a command economy so the Govt cant force private businesses to buy your product let alone at a guaranteed minimum price. Its a free market and unless you develop your consumer market yourself you will never have any say in their choice of purchases other than take it or leave it!
The ideal would be a cooperative system where you are supplying a business you have a financial interest in. Sadly the market is seriously skewed against new entrants and always will be.

You will be with willo then? As I had the same message.

A friend of mine recently came home from a stalking trip in the Scottish Borders. He had shot 8 roe. All heart/lung shot. None exhibited excessive carcass damage. I saw the skinned carcasses in his larder. All well presented. He knows how to skin and prep having hunted for 50 + years.
Well, what to do with 8 roe ? He approached eight fairly local butchers, family run affairs and established. He was looking for £30 apiece, and £25 for two smaller 'followers'. Not one butcher was interested ! Two apparently were interested if he would take off the haunches for them.
With Spring lamb selling into the butchers circa £180 - £200 apiece currently you imagine any butcher would view a well presented roe carcass (similar sized beast) @ £30 a good deal and be able to realise a good return. Seemingly not ! Something is wrong somewhere.
I took two of the carcasses for farming friends, the remaining four have gone for 'dog food' !
Maybe 'VSS' has an insight on this ? Viewing similar 'threads' recently, the above scenario appears not dissimilar to others experiences.

PS. The 'local' game-dealer was simply not interested.....maybe only if 'free gratis' !

find other outlets, butchers, charities for the homless/needy, out door groups, people with dogs on raw, wildlife parks. if you want to shoot the deer you will have to work for an outlet or let people come and shoot the deer to take home

Exactly. I think we are meant to shoot another 50,000 in Scotland. Where are they going to go and for how much? You can't start a wee business and dispose of that lot. The market just isn't there. Presumably the market will adjust, they will go to dog food and we will get pennies rather than pounds. More Sellers than Buyers.
