It's been a well known fact for decades that government loathes private ownership of firearms and have slowly been strangling our sports for years. Any excuses all they need for another knot to strangle us with. It matters not which party either.

Reloading quality 1000 mtr capable 308 ammunition now cost over a 100 quid per 100,
And a decent 100 bird clay shoot is banging on the door of 100 quid,
Either of the two can easily be done in a couple of hours,
Personally I don’t this a cheap hobby

Id say its similar set up cost to a hobby like golf, but we can in theory shoot animals for free and end up with a meal.
Your examples are both fair but 1000m targets arent the norm, just as going to the top end golf courses isnt either.
I even earn money out of my hobby

I might be particularly fortunate, but my experience has been pretty positive. Having always been interested in field sports and dabbled with friends I decided to get organised.

A farmer friend kindly gave me permission and I applied for CF RF and Shotgun. Wasn’t sure what I wanted so was given slot for one of .308 or 6.5, .22 and .17 and shotguns. Took a couple of months.

Bought a .308, then a .17 and a 12. Found a fun .22 over 20 combination and got a variation in a week.

Got a new permission and couldn’t find out if it was cleared for .308 (was in a different jurisdiction) so asked my lot to open my ticket. They opened everything.

My shooting costs a lot less than golf would and I get to eat a lot of venison. Will take a while to cover the capital spent on my .308 and scope by selling to game dealer, but eventually I’ll be in profit and I could have bought cheaper, but equally functional items.

Why? go back many years and as HO approved clubs we never had “guest” days and never had problems.

Yet again just us as shooters accepting more and more hurdles into the sport.

“Guest days” - you might want to have at the actual requirements for guest days. To be frank if the club is organising such an event, then it will be arranged in advance and hence no issues in the orderly liason with the police.

1. The ban on day or temporary membership is to stop casual shooters being able to come in off the street and shoot. It should not be confused with properly organised guest days, competition shoots between clubs or events open to individuals who are not members of that club. An organised and notified guest day is required only for guest members who are neither members of another approved club nor firearm certificate holders, visitor’s permit holders or holders of permits issued under section 7 of the 1968 Firearms Act.
2. Examples of recognised outside organisations whose members may be guest members of approved rifle and muzzle-loading pistol clubs are scouts and guides, schools, rotary clubs and Women’s Institutes. The duty to notify the police of guest days is laid on the club secretary. This may be delegated to the appointed liaison officer.

It’s just more crap by the HO and Police, a casual shooter can come in off the street and shoot at a miniature rifle range without any questions asked. What ever a casual shooter is? So a member cannot at lib invite a friend who has never shot before to join them without waiting for the formal “guest” event.

Tell me how frequently after the police have been notified of a guest day and the people attending do they intervene and take action to stop the event or a person attending? Do would be terrorist ask to attend?

You've got this all wrong.

Ditch the 308 and shoot .22rf bench rest.
Buy cartridges 10000 at a time...works out cheaper for your clay shooting.

Assuming you applied in good time if you need to lodge guns with an rfd (assuming there are any left and willing) then the cost of this should be born by the police. That said they must issue a s7 if they are at fault

Apparently, recent HO guidance to FEO’s is not to issue S.7’s - looks like more behind the scenes restrictive practices, but I suspect it’s more likely to be the inability of teams to administer the ever more complicated process in good time. If the HO bothered to do some basic research on the root causes they might have a better chance of fixing the issues instead of making the shooter wait and incur additional costs. Not fit for purpose is a good description but doesn’t seem to have prompted better practice or process improvement.

I don't hold that. I used to do lots of things with a passion bit wouldn't cross over the road to do even with it that close. I am still a Life Member of Leicestershire County Cricket Club yet other than England v Australia have little interest in the game now. I used to fly fish but my many rods sit in the attic in their tubes and the reels in their pouches since Thornton Reservoir closed to fishing when the then proprietor Ifor Jones died in 2024. And, thank the Lord, I no longer rebuild my cars as I did in the 1970s with engine rebuilds, replacing clutches, brake pads and all of that. But I still, for now, shoot.

You make a good point Lee. I think its all to easy to resort to name calling when people disagree. We all have different views but its not difficult to disagree in a sensible manner

I disagree with people who live in counties where the highest point is a church spire...or where bog snorkling is a recognised sport ....or people who dont own creedmoors...but alas we cant all be perfect
