Sweden-Prisons?

Agreed Ken, it appears as if the clock has been turned back a few centuries with regards to law & order in this country... gangs rampaging through shops stealing high-value goods and the police & CPS doing absolutely nothing about it worries me greatly.

The truth is if you want to reduce reoffending you actually need Norwegian prisons “ Correctional facilities in Norway focus on maintaining custody of the offender and attempting to make them functioning members of society. Norway's prison system is renowned as one of the most effective and humane in the world”

As above, offender rehabilitation is the way forward but such an approach requires:

a. Massive financial investment.
b. The implementation of measurable prisoner educational/correctional outcomes. An example would be if an illiterate Prisoner hasn't learnt to read & write during his/her encaseration their release should be delayed accordingly.
c. Sea-change in our outlook and approach to societal inclusivity. (Much is spoken about the need for "growth" of our economy but such must surely be to the benefit of all and not just the few?)

True, but takes money. The Norwegians have money, the UK does not

We've no room left ....
So folk under 4yrs now oyster serve 40% of time
Releasing current prisoners early and straight back Into reoffending some a day after release .

No money to build more prisons

No consequences or deterent now a day's ...
So selfish bad bar stewards just do what they want and don't give 2 f**ks about consequences or whom it effects

Never work here, the Norwegian society has a completely different outlook and ethic - U.K. people do not and would not respond in the same way.

I spend a lot of time in Norway and notice many things about the people that does not happen here as a general rule. (People picking up little rifles they see it, even if it’s not theirs, polite public services people, people asking if others are ok etc)

You can be a lot more trusting in Norway and not be disappointed. And I hate to say it but the only concern they seem to have is crime due to immigration at the moment…what a shock eh?

The prison service was nothing to do with the money - speak to any Norwegian and they’ll explain that it was always that way. (Success in rehabilitation)

Sweden must still be kicking themselves though! 😂😂

I assume that was a typo, rather than a reflection on their firearms laws....? 🤣

My research has shown our prison service is way more expensive than Norway principally because we lock up more people and have higher reoffending rates sort of revolving door idea. So counterintuitively better prisons with more focus on rehabilitation will lower the net bill for the prison services.
