The buttolo call

What a rush!

I have had the buttolo caller since Christmas and have had zero luck with it, the biggest reaction I have seen is the deer lifting it's head, looking for a moment then going back to whatever it was doing....

That was...

Until yesterday!

Saw a pair of muntjac just over 200 yards away on the opposite edge of the field I was in.
There was no chance of getting closer without spooking them and they're were just about to go into the neighboring land....

Thought I'd try the call ....

Three *squeaks*... NOTHING

Three *squeaks*... And the buck lifts his head looking at me but no other reaction

Thought, what the hell, kinda got his attention, let's try again ...

Three more *squeaks* and he just comes CHARGING in towards me!
Wasn't expecting that!!!

On the sticks and thinking "he's getting pretty close now!" So shouted....
Did that stop him? Nope!

Getting really close now so shouted again and thankfully he slowed his pace, came to a stop but was facing me head on....
Typical, in range, safe backstop but wrong body position (and I don't feel comfortable doing head shots)

Then as if it was meant to be, he took a few steps forward and in doing so, had turned virtually broadside (slightly quartering)

*BANG* - *FLOP*

He'd come in from about 220ish yards down to 63 yards!

What an experience!!!

You have had better luck with me on the buttolo then! I tried to squeak one on last weekend for a friend who was shooting with me and the buck just ignored every squeak and went the other way!!

Same as me!

Have a lot of Muntjac on our ground but none seem to pay any attention to calls. Sometimes they will pause, but never had one come in to the call.

It's only ever worked for me once, when I first bought it. I had my rifle still in the slip after a successful stalk on a fallow, and gave it a squeak to see. A buck came tearing out of some rhododendron in front of me and nearly bumped into me. It was quite funny seeing him engage 4 wheel drive to get into reverse. Since then, nothing. In fact, out on Thursday I was trying it again, like I always do, and I just managed to make one bark at me from deep cover (Fairly confident he couldn't see me and the wind was perfect).

Has anyone found a useful video of how to call them with a buttolo or a cherry wood? I've seen a few, but they do seem to vary. There was a recent one on Fieldsports Channel, but they over-dubbed it for comic effect.

On another note, has anyone ever heard a muntjac actually make a sound anything like these calls in the wild?

The calls are supposed to imitate either:

A doe under pressure from a buck - can bring in other bucks as they feel a territorial threat

A young Fawn - lost its mum/trying to get mums attention, bucks come in as there may be presence of a doe. Can call in does as they think a young fawn is in distress.

I have never heard a MJ doe or Buck do anything other than bark though

With regards to Fieldsports Channel, there is s video by Paul Childerley on there where he uses his lips to squeak in a buck. I have tried that and found you get more attention from bucks and does. don't necessarily come charging in as only really a short range call, but can be enough to get them to stand up/ move enough for a shot if they are in thick cover.

Muntjac are very weary most of the time. So sometimes they come in like an express train other times they come very slow and cautiously to the point you don't know they are there. But for me this is why they are my favourite deer to stalk.
Don't be disheartened if they don't come straight in if you can see them and they have not seen you try calling and see what there reaction is sometimes three calls on the Buttalo wait then put it in your pocket and do three calls this gives the impression the deer that's calling is going away from the muntjac you are trying to call in this sometimes makes them come in faster as they think they're going to lose the Deer they are trying to follow. Saying all this I have watched muntjac who have not known I was there and had no interest at all no matter what I did at the end of the day it's a wild animal.

Do you rate the Alpex look great on your rifle.

What calibre is your rifle?
Really digging it to be honest!
It's not as clear as glass during the day time but to be honest, the image I find very detailed and clear so no complaints!

The big pro of course is the low light situations/twilight hours, in that last 20 mins of legal time you would really struggle with a glass scope but the image of the alpex is amazing!

Haven't tried the ballistic calculator yet but have a range finder on the scope is very handy indeed!

Caliber is 308 💥

Oh & the fact the scope records is a big plus too! You can relive the moment and see exactly where the cross hairs were when you took the shot!
