The Creedmoor conundrum

Don't forget the PRC is a Magnum cartridge, completely different animal to a .270Win, further , flatter, but noticeably less felt recoil.
I’m not convinced it’s all that different.

The differences are there, but none so big that you’d know for sure if handed one at random and told to get on with it without knowing which you had.

Difficult to dismiss a calibre like the 6.5 x55 on grounds of available ammunition type. Plenty to choose from on the shelf any all will make a deer as dead as any other calibre / cartridge.
How often do people change ammunition type unless forced to once you find what you and your rifle like. Go for the CM if you just want the flavour of the month. It will dispatch all deer in the UK as will any other deer legal calibre.

Buy a CM easy to move on if you don’t like it. Had mine for a long time and love it. Took the .270 out the other day though because not used it since I got my 6.5 and put a red spiker down. Missed the satisfying thump of it whacking the target. If I had to chose one though it would be the 6.5.

I’m in the .260 camp vs the CM. I’ve two rifles chambered in it and it can do everything. Just another one to consider but they all pretty much do the same thing.

If I popped in to the countryman at Derby there is little to no chance I will talk out with any .260 ammunition.

The .260 is so similar to the 6.5 creedmoor and 6.5X55 it’s dead in the water.

I can preach about the .260 or 6.5 X47 un5il the cows come home. However there is only on3 stocks by most gun shops now and that is the 6.5 Creedmoor.

I have 6.5 creedmoor and 6.5 X47 in my cabinet. The rifle has a barrel that can be changed and is currently wearing a 16” .308 to shoot home loaded 130gr Barnes TTSX.

It I was reliant on any one rifle (which I think would be daft) then it would be a 6.5 creedmoor shooting some factory lead free ammunition.

The 6mm is a cracking bullet and will fly fast and dump its energy in what it hits. However to achieve the best from the bullet it needs to be travelling fast. The extra half inch allows the bullet to accelerate fast enough.

My favourite round is actually the 6.5X47 but there is no hope of getting that in a factory loaded round, unless you pay an exuberant fee.

Short barrels <18” .308 with a lead freebullet <130gr. Anything else 6.5 I would be happy with a <120gr and 20” barrel. No more bedding. Just grab the bang stick and go.

But it’s a Saturday afternoon and I’m not busy so it’s a good read 😜

You should have started a thread of what rifles you have...you missed out fps load primer type......................

I have come across a few people recently that have said the only reason for not getting a 6.5 Creedmoor is they didnt want the ribbing, i tells its own storey, it really is a one size fits all calibre, yes it could be said of the 6.5x55 but that will be obsolete in a couple of years, the only reason not to is if your not man enough.

As with others I’m biased towards .243. More than enough factory ammo offerings. A lot of the newer rifles (T3) are now available 1-in-8 twist from factory too.
Don’t dismiss a short barrel 6.5PRC if woodland stalking. The shorter barrel will reduce MV but you’ll still be as fast as a 6.5CM even at 18 inches or so.
Check out the Hornady podcast #146 on exactly this.

Point taken on the factory ammo! I only reload so often overlook that important aspect! Funny but was talking to a mate about what deer rifle to get and mentioned the CM, he wouldn’t have it on principle! I don’t feel strongly one way or another to be honest, just ended up down the .260 route when I bought my AI. Another mate had a 6.5 x 47 and his results at long range were spectacular, cracking cartridge.

I’m a big fan of the 6.5CM. I chose it as my first deer calibre for the reasons you mentioned:
- Flat shooting
- Mild recoil
- Good availability of factory ammo/rifles
- Can use on any UK deer
I hate to burst your bubble here, but much as I like the Creedmoor, it is not at all flat shooting. If you’re using factory ammo out of a 20” barrel, it will drop as much as a .308 (in fact probably more).

My 6.5CM 20” 140 gr shoots quite a bit flatter from the start vs my 308 20” 168gr. Higher velocity at any distance.

Nothing wrong with the 6.5 Creedmoor, despite all the negativity. It’s a rifle cartridge, just like many others old and new, that’s it.
I wouldn’t be betting money on the Swede being obsolete in a couple (2) years. It’s been around for way over 100 years and, at least in Scandinavia, outsells the Creedmoor and probably will for many years to come.
At the end of the day a 120-140 grain .264" bullet launched at 2500-3000 fps will get the job done, whether it is from a 6.5 Swede, 260 Rem, 6.5 Creedmoor, 6.5 PRC or a 6.5x47 Lapua.
