Earlier today I started a thread titled "Peace", in the Off-Topic section of the site, which a few people had replied to in a civilised manner.
However, the whole thread now appears to have been removed.
Why's that?

Because it became 'political'. Sorry.
Well in that case you should have deleted the "political" posts, and left the thread where it was. It was not intended to be a political discussion, and that should have been pretty obvious to you.
I want to reply to someone - on my own thread - with regard to the short story by John Buchan that I referenced in my opening post, but now I can't.

I'm all in favour of the new policy re: political discussion, but in the interests of fairness there may be times when you need to split threads or deal with hijacking posts accordingly.

No, I don't agree that's right. It's moved it still continues to be a thread whether you choose to see it or not.

If you want me to remove it, I'll remove it though.

Well I think that's a serious flaw in the new regime. A bit of judgement needs to be exercised, otherwise you're basically giving free rein to any mischief maker who wants to put a political slant on every thread.

But doesn’t that mean that any thread can be hijacked and turned into a political one by people posting political comments?

In that case I'd delete the posts and the thread wouldn't be moved.

And I'm saying, I disagree. :thumb:
Well if a thread is started in the "political discussion" section then it's obviously a political thread. And if a thread is started outwith the "political discussion" section then it's obviously not meant to be a political thread, unless perhaps started by someone who is unaware of the split (eg, a new member).

Do you want it to be deleted?
No.
I just want it put back where it belongs.

What will you do if, after several pages of "sensible" discussion, someone throws a political comment into a non-political thread? Move the whole thread so that the bulk of members can no longer benefit from the information contained therein, just because one member chose to be different?

And what will you do if someone posts a non-political comment in a political thread? Move the whole thread to the main part of the site as the subject has now changed? I doubt it, but by your own reckoning you ought to.

Delete the offending post.

Move it to a different forum if it seems that important.

Threads, on the other hand, which seem to get people 'to bite' (down to politics) will either be deleted, or moved to 'Political Discussions', if they are started in the wrong forum.

I do have a 'bit' of experience moderating a forum, you know! ;)

I don't question your experience, but in this instance I question your judgment.
If you're not prepared to delete the deviant posts and reinstate the discussion in its rightful place, then better to delete the whole thread. It makes no sense for it to be where it is.

First and foremost this is a Deer Stalking site, not a site for political rants or discussions. We, and in particular Alex came up with the idea of setting up a part of the site for political discussions.
This I fully support. It was added to the site for good reason.

I support it too.
In fact, most members appear to.

But some discretion will need to be exercised, otherwise potentially useful, entertaining or harmless threads will end up being shifted to the political section as a result of a few people persistently posting political comments in non political threads.

Where topic drift or hijacking occurs, it would be best to either split the thread or delete the deviant posts, otherwise the bulk of members are losing out.

Yes, we have a lot of time in our day to start splitting posts/threads. Its impossible to keep everyone happy in life.

Ok, just one more thing:
What about political subjects that relate directly 100% to UK deer management?
For example, posts by BASC encouraging us to lobby our MPs in advance of a particular parliamentary decision.
Where will those threads be found? I'm sure you'll agree that it's important that they reach as wide an audience as possible.
Perhaps in the Legal section of the site, rather than in Political Discussion?
