Hi everyone looking for some advice I purchased a Swarovski 3-12x50 habicht last year not fussed about mag or all the fancy scopes as not into long range but I really want a illuminated ret scope.
If I changed it for a scmidt and bender 8x56 ir would the optics be better than what I currently have bearing in mind the Swarovski is probably 8 years old haven't got much spare cash to upgrade cheers guys

Well, you would be swapping the versatility of a 3-12 for an illuminated 8. So ask yourself if that's what you need (or want perhaps) initially. Then factor in that as a punter, you won't make money although you might not actually physically lose any.

But as for the relative merits of these particular scopes, I can't comment. Except to say that both of them are good scopes by all accounts and (speaking generally) fixed scopes tend to have better light conducting qualities.

If you're mainly woodland stalking illuminated is a must against a dark background. Use mine all the time.mcleod on here were doing snb 2.5_10×56.For 795 at one point and the polar for 995.I would say you wouldn't have too much difference to make up if you sold yours.regards Gary

The 8x56 il s/b I had was very good but I traded it for 2.5x10-56 fd7 s/b because the dot on the 8x56 was only really of any use 1st and last half hours of light whereas the fd7 is perfect all day as was the variable doctor I got off here . I still keep an 8x56 s/b on my classic 270 but only because of the fact it’s a classic I prefer the variable all day red dot As my eyes deteriorate as I get older 😜

Ive just put a bog standard 6x42 SB back on my .270 , and can't think for the life of me why I ever took it off. You can see where the crosshairs are pointing for bloody miles.

Awful lot of stalking scopes don’t get moved beyond 6-8x mag
With the rare occasion you take it to the zeroing range

If you wanted to swap we would give you a good deal on the trade
We have used 1” and 30mm German and Hungarian S&B 8x56, and new Hungarian 8x56 in stock

Have you actually used illuminated reticle in the field ? Personally speaking I can't be doing with them over and above a reasonably broad aiming point in the std black . If you have a fine cross hair ( have a leopold like that on one of mine ) it can be a pita as you can see the beast just great but the aim point has gone . The cure is don't buy target /varmint scopes for deerstalking
Can literally shoot moonlight at full moon with my s+benders none illuminated and have (on fox over bait )

I went with an illuminated Reticle - a simple red dot in the middle of the cross hair. I haven't found it provides me with any more ability to take a shot on a deer compared to my other rifles with have traditional No 4 and 4a reticles. The other big issue is that it has three turrets which makes it a pain in the arse to put in and out of the cabinet.

And in terms of optics, I have a mid 1970's Zeiss 6x42 in claw mounts on one Rifle, a Swarovski Nova 3-9x36 on another (must be 25 years old), a 4-12x50 Swarovski on 223, a Leica 2.5-10 x 42 ERi (with illuminated dot) on the Rigby and a S&B 6x42 on the 22lr, and I really can not choose between any of them in terms of optical clarrity, image or low light performance. I have shot Boar at 3am in the middle of winter with the Zeiss 6x42, and Roe with the 3-9x36 at very last light.

Optics for last 25 odd years have been very good, and top end optics have been very good for many years. Low and mid range optics have though improved enormously. Where a number of modern scopes do have an advantage is their easy dialed turret, so you dial to a predetermined distance. Its a bit like flicking up the leaves on an old open sight. Useful for those shooting out to long distances and on small targets at long distance, but for 95% of hunting applications zeroing for maximum point blank range for your cartridge (ie about 180 to 220 yards or metres depending on calibre and your preferred unit of measure) means that its point and shoot and your bullet will be either side of the cross hair out to 220 and if its a bit further hold a touch higher. IMHO if you need to think about holding over the back or adjusting sights its too far, and I have been hunting long enough to know that wind and all other embuggerences really come into play down range that for me its much much better to either pass up the shot, or get in closer, and ditto if you cannot see the buck with your naked eye and are relying on optics to place the shot.

You have a perfect stalking scope with brilliant optics.
You have an itch for something ‘better’.
This situation will return to you regularly.
Swapping the scope out will not change the number of deer you put in the larder, but it will ease the itch for a few weeks.
If you do change? The benefits of the scope you used to have will become evident.
Welcone to the club 😁

I would sell the Sw. and buy a good used S&B IR instead. You will have some cash left. Saying that, I personally have NEVER taken a shot using the IR...despite having it on several scopes. In bad light, I find it easier to see the silhouette of a deer and place the crosshairs in the killing zone without having the IR switched on. Also, I find a x6 or x8 Fixed Power scope perfectly suitable for almost all hunting scenarios (Lowland/woodland, deer/boar).
