Under UK law, placing snap caps in a shotgun for transportation is legal, though not strictly required. Police guidelines require shotguns to be unloaded, disassembled (where possible), concealed, and stored securely out of sight during transit (e.g., in a locked boot). [1, 2]

Police guidelines and the firearms act are not one and the same thing.

I always thought it was recommended, for additional security, to put snapcaps in a shotgun, pull the triggers, and then remove the fore end. It's then impossible to re-cock the firing pins without refitting the fore end.

Hi all,
A heads up! I have just been told NOT to LOAD SNAP CAPS IN ANY' FIREARM THAT IS BEING TRANSPORTED. ( INCLUDES SHOT GUNS) The police would now treat it as a loaded firearm. I was told they did not think to pass on this information?

I guess a gun will also be seen as being loaded should there be a note with the rifle stating "this rifle identifies itself as being loaded".

Never heard that one before, but I think that the police are confusing attended with unattended shotguns

During transport, I meant.
A bit like removing the bolt from your rifle and keeping it on your person. You do the same with the shotgun fore end.
But even so, someone who was criminally minded could still fire two shots from a double barrelled shotgun without the forend. But not if the firing pins have been released onto snapcaps. That makes it impossible to fire until reunited with the fore end.
At least, that is my understanding of it.

But different forces in the UK often don't all say the same about many things

A clearly dummy round of clear/red plastic with a spring in.
No powder,shot,wad or primer.

Boiing went Zebedee, what am l missing?

Why so?a polite question.
Got a bollocking at a clay ground last year for opening the gun, ejecting and pocketing the snap caps

The guy running the site said that implied I did not check the guns were clear when I got them out and put them in the car.

It wasn't worth the argument that I just always put them in my SxSs even when I check them at home just before going out, I won't be going back anyway
