What Car/4x4

Here goes, and I'm sure I'll get lots of different answers but I still want to ask to see if anything pops up I haven't thought about yet.
I'm thinking about changing my car. My use is predominantly social. I head up to Scotland 2/3 times a month to stalk for a day or two at a time. I've also just set up a small pest control/wildlife management business and am thinking whatever I get will be used for that too although it's only low usage level at the moment.
Predominantly I need a 4x4 that will manage the forestry/farm tracks and something that is reasonably economical on the motorway drive up for a couple of hundred miles.
I was toying with the idea of going hybrid, secondhand something like the mitsubishi outlander or volvo xc60 but not sure they'll cut it really on the tracks.
I'm hoping some others have gone through this dilemma and any answers might help in one way or another.
For 4x4 pick up I'm leaning towards the Fiat Fullback/izuzu 1.9/nissan navara?
Thanks in advance...

Just as a matter of principle I would never consider anything with a Fiat badge on it.
Basically it’s not a Fiat it’s a rebadged Mitsubishi L200 and last I heard there was no UK Mitsubishi importer.

Of the vehicles you mentioned I’d opt for a new Navara but make sure you get the chassis well treated and keep it treated.

It'll be a secondhand one, somewhere in the range of 16-23thou.. 👍

I have a lwb shogun and it’s not a bad stalking truck.
Recently drive to southern France in it and managed 1500+ miles over a 36 hour period (2x12 hour drives each covering 750 miles with 12 hour break) and it was both remarkably comfortable (not quite as good as the xc90) but pretty good, and it’s fuel economy was not shabby either despite it having a 3.2 litre engine and the aero dynamics of a concrete block!!

Off road, so long at it’s got the right boots on, it will handle most stuff a decent 4x4 can (multi range box with locking diffs) and kn road it will sit at 80 all day without any issue.

Decent size boot (not a big as a disco tho) but seats fold and tip if you need a bigger loadbay

If its just forestry tracks and similar such a SUV like the volvo, or toyota RAV4 will be fine and breeze up and down the motorway and around town. Having had a Rav previously I used mine for exactly the same type of driving and ne er had any problems.

I would only go pickup if you really need a pickup. Most 4x4 cars with reasonable ground clearance are more than capable of forestry and farm tracks especially if you decent all weather / snow and mud type tyres. And avoid skinny low profile tyres as well. VW Tiguan / Passat alltrack, Skoda, Subarus etc all good. Mitsubishi Outlander is mot very tough by all accounts. In laws had a volvo XC60 that they put 150,000 of trouble free miles on.

For long distance motorway type work, Hybrids don’t really work or have much advantage. You may as well stick with a good car. Extra cost and weight is high. They work if you have cheap electricity and do lots of short local journeys.

A ssangyong Korando. I’ve got the 2.2 manual. 40 mpg on daily running. I’ve taken it along farm tracks and in mud. With Road tyres. It would be a lot better with decent tyres. Kept it 7 years and keeping it until it needs money spending. It’s only cost me for service items. Warning the manual gearbox is rough. Strong but rough.

I'm in the same situation.
I'm running a RAV4 58plate at the moment. It was the wife's car so I had it when we got rid of my golf.
I haven't touched the trip in the three years I've had it and does 52mpg.
Goes across fields and tracks no problem. Good load space. Fitted 7 fallow in it the other week.
Toyota kindly put a new engine in it at 96,000 miles due to known head gasket issue.
It's just clocked 200,000 miles

Not sure what to get next.
Maybe another one but possibly petrol as don't want the problem of the engine on the older ones when they are over 7 years old. Toyota won't pay then 😏

I'm also considering a VW Caddy 4 motion but like hens teeth. Bigger all terrain tyres and a 20mm lift kit. I think would be an ideal stalking/shooting and daily motor.
