Which 6mm?

What’s the availability of 6XC reloading dies now days as this was a calibre I was really interested in but when I researched it about 18 months ago it was really difficult to find any reloading dies and the US retails would not send them over unless I did it via a shipping agent. Hopefully the situation has improved.

I'll throw 6x47lap into the pot, mainly because I'm just waiting on mine back from proof and no one else has mentioned it.
Also I belive that's what the great Eric Cortina used for his incredible 1000yd 1.3" 5 shot group which will take some beating!

Just started with a 6x47 this season, lovely cartridge to shoot, feeds fine, very efficient 38g of powder with get a 108g up around the 2900-3000, I like mine a lot brass prep is fine after your initial full length size on 6.5x47 brass really is easy.

6-06!! Never heard of it before but sounds bananas.
I have a 25-06 and that is a bit overbore, can’t imagine it with a 6mm bullet.

From chuckhawks-
At 3100 fps the ME of a 105 grain bullet is about 2240 ft. lbs. The 200 yard figures are 2663 fps and 1653 ft. lbs. The trajectory of that load looks like this: +1.5" at 100 yards, +2.3" at 200 yards, 0 at 258 yards, and -3" at 305 yards.

Interesting and very appealing to rifle smiths ,,,, spare barrel with every build 😂

6mm Grendel

In real terms , the commercial version is the 6ARC, essentially 6mm Grendel with an improved shoulder angle . The factory ammunition is on the anaemic side as it's designed for the American AR15 Market and runs at lower pressure. SAAMI specify pressures lower for gas guns and higher for bolt actions . Obviously , if handloading for a bolt action it would be possible to unleash its full potential.
Make an interesting alternative for someone I'm sure .Screenshot_20221125-074747_Drive.webpScreenshot_20221125-074726_Drive.webp

Based on the above, much like the 6x45 it will struggle to make deer legal, took me 18 months or so to get the 25-45 reliably and safely deer legal and it is very dependant on powder, brass and primer type. The tighter bore of the 6x45 and 6 Grendel / ARC means you are limited to slower powders than in a .257 or .264 bore which makes 1700 ft-lb more difficult. Same reason I would go 6.5 Grendel if I had my time again, virtually same powder capacity but the .264 over .257 bore makes 1700 ft-lb more readily achievable.

It’s a very interesting cartridge but I would not recommend it. Velocity was almost identical to the 6-284 but with more powder. Not really worth it. I feel that the case design is better suited for heavier, larger calibre projectiles- almost like it was designed for that ;). Though, the 6.5-280AI is an absolute gem and I would probably call it the king of non magnum 6.5’s in terms of velocity. I digress.

OP should stick with something that’s easy and available. There are so many brilliant options! Just look for a fast twist, especially if you’re trying to make it deer legal.

2800 fps is 1741ft/lbs so the potential is there , all academic of course.
Yeah looks like it, although on paper 25-45 was easy with exterminator being the powder recommended by the sharps rifle company. Getting it there with a 25” barrel proved somewhat more difficult and I only found 2 powders that do it!

The other issue is getting hold of AA2520 or Leverevolution in the uk.

But the extra 2 grains of capacity and 2000 psi max pressure would lend themselves to more power.

243 win or 243 AI , shot 243 win a heck of a lot and its done everything just fine . IMO the only thing hanging over it is the Scottish 100 grain thing .
lots of mis information about what it won't kill well i can attest its killed them all for me , with minimum recoil allowing me to spot the strike Crows , foxes , stags and other stuff
Barrel life ? well i shot mine hard ( though no long strings ) for two decades the barrel looked pretty eroded on the bore scope but it was dead nuts accurate and i even retained the barrel.
When my Daughter wants her own rifle it will be my number 1 choice to recommend ( provided Scotland do drop the 100 grain rule ) . Its amazing what folks kill globally with the 243 win without bother
Just wish i recorded shot count so i could inform better

Whidden have shipped a number of dies to me over the years.
