Which trophy shield for fallow buck ?

Hi everyone

Would like to keep a buck head I got on Saturday, was wondering which shield everyone else uses ?

Oo and 1 last question, stupidly I boiled the head for like 1.5-2 hours most of the meat came out but there’s still a bit of jelly like substance on the back of the skull and some meat in the head that I can’t get too, any tips to getting these out?

Next time I’ll let the bugs at the skull won’t happen now I used chemicals to clean up the skull

Fallow is by far the worst I’ve experienced and I’ve done a lot over the years.

Skin, boil with a splodge of non biological washing liquid and pressure wash, scrape the jelly bits off am boil again to degrease.

Mine is now in peroxide, the jelly bits scrape with a sharp knife, don’t be lazy you’ll **** it up!

Burying heads you plan to keep is,
In my opinion is lazy disrespectful and it should be done properly, if you don’t want to keep the head take the antlers for dog chews.

I went with a proper nice plaque, I waited 20 years for my buck so the job had to be done properly and with thr respect it deserves

I wouldn’t, time to get scrapping to be honest mine didn’t take that long it’s just the ball ache of doing it!

But do not let the head dry out, keep it in water from The minute you get it home until you bleach it, if you don’t and it drys you really are in for a world of pain!

Keeping it in water keeps everything moist and workable

You may be pushing it to boil it s third time without causing damage- Fallow are the worsts I have done . Have done a few recently and have been boiled for a good hour and then jet washed to clean the brain and nasal cavity out. Then when the skull has no meat left on it. Cover the skull with 6% peroxide for 24 hours, then wash off and leave to dry. Fallow skulls are quite tough. Roe are the easiest and I find CWD are brittle to clean.

Bleach is no good as it has a deleterious effect on skull bones. If you simmer for long enough there will be no scraping. Some make a paste up with H/peroxide and paint on. Or don`t bother at all lol

I swore blind 10 years ago I wouldn’t do another, I hate doing it, it’s nothing but a ball ache, when a trophy of a lifetime comes along needs must.

I really cannot see what you blokes are complaining about (fallow heads) they are no harder than any other..a lot easier in fact as they are quite small. We use the same old method for any deer skulls (if for inside). I understand that many of you don't have space or the wood or the tolerant neighbours but its simple as all ****.
Any decent vessel ie fuel drum or such and for over the top I simply use the axe to cut a square out of some sec hand roof iron and of a size that it overlaps the perimeter of the vessel so as to stop flames licking the antlers. Washing powder is good to add as it has caustic soda in it..the reason it stings ones hands when using it to wash grease off.
Pommy SD bloke boiling out after two good shots for two stags...and the bastard clover leafed the .300 win mag test shots at a 100.

Haven’t left the head to dry it’s still in a bucket with water and washing up liquid.

Was going to use H/peroxide next.

Does anyone paint their skull afterwards ? I don’t see the point…

To add to that does anyone spray on some clear lacquer to preserve it ?

Will definitely get the last bits out and then use the cotton wool method, it’s by no means a trophy head but it’s the biggest iv got (and is my first deer since my DSC1)
