Winchester - xpr

I would be interested to hear the views of those who own/stalk with the Winchester xpr. Need an estate/guest rifle, they seem to fit the bill and would like some advice from those in the know. Looking at a .308 to cover all bases.

Cheers,

Mike

Just so you know , there was a recall on the XPR's due to unintentional discharges . Apparently there were some problems with the safety/trigger assemblies on the earlier models . Currently produced models have the upgraded safety/trigger assembly . Something to keep in mind . There are a few owners at my gun club ( newer models ) , they like theirs and they seem to be accurate rifles . Just make sure what you're buying .

I have one in 7mm-08 with a 22-inch barrel and camo stock. The metal is all coated with something very much like Melonite, which Winchester has been using on their waterfowl shotguns for years.

The action is very much like the Browning A-Bolt III. I got mine on sale, below wholesale, with a $50 rebate coupon, for an any weather hunting rifle and loaner. The oversize bolt is coated with something like a clear Teflon, so is very smooth. Weight is about 7 ounces more than my Tikka T3 Lite in 7mm-08.

I have shot it with a variety of factory ammunition as well as some handloads with my Model 70 and T3 love. It shot all of them into MOA groups. The largest group was 1.10 inches, smallest was .63. So it is just now broken in. At the price of a Ruger American, it feels more substantial, and is half the price of a T3X. Extra magazines are about $20 here. The trigger is pretty good. The barrel is Begara ( probably the entire rifle ).

It is offered threaded in 6.5 CM, .243 Win, .30-06 and .300 WM at the moment. There are several extensive tests of the .30-06 and 6.5 CM online, and it shot well for them.
