Hi folks.
Having followed the thread “club membership query” I started searching YSA and Yorkshire Shooting Academy, I’m looking for a current opinion of the membership please.
I was literally intending to join today until I thought to have a look here first. Their website is a bit vague and contradictory the more I read it?!
I have my FAC application already submitted and have completed my DSC1, but was hoping to bolster my application with a mentor or club membership too.
I’m located 30min south of Middlesbrough.

Thanks in advance- and also thank you for the inclusion to the forum, it’s a fantastic resource for information.

Pardon the flying fisherman on here is just outside Thirsk. He does accompanied stalking .he's a good lad

I would try Colin Lockerbie. He seems to have a good reputation, and is on the Scottish borders.

Generally most outings on Roe bucks, which are now in season is about £100 an outing. Plus carcass, which should be about £40 to £50.

Generally I would advise keeping away from many of these clubs come syndicates. There are some good ones, but one only needs to ask around and you will soon find out who to avoid.

Thanks Sikamalc. I appreciate you taking the time to comment.
It really is a bit of a minefield for a newbie finding trustworthy or reliable contacts (I found the same thing a decade ago with game days!).
SD proving itself as a great place for genuine info again- cheers

Hi Parko,
Can I recommend John Robson of YDS (Yorkshire Deer Stalking) who is based in Driffield and has lots of good stalking ground from Pickering to Hull plus further afield. He is a very experienced stalker/guide and will taylor your visit to suit your needs.
Willie

Good luck to you Parko. Its an awkward position to be new to the game (as we all were at one point) and very much chicken and egg. You need a rifle to get stalking but you need stalking to get a deer legal caliber. Hopefully once you are sorted you can get some ground of your own and that makes the process worthwhile. Whilst its nice to be out with different guides its not the same as shooting deer on "your own ground".

Like a lot of people Ive been shooting vermin etc for many years and that has given me access to land...just waiting for the deer to arrive near me before I'm too old or dead

Absolutely spot on Mike! I’ve got opportunities in Scotland with a good friend next month (professional etc, so all good) but was hoping to find something reputable locally if for nothing more than convenience for zeroing and ammo testing etc in between booked stalks at least for now- assuming I’ll get my grant with confirmed bookings and my DSC1 🤞
I’m not desperate or in any rush, but having put a few £’s into this already is quite like to get a bit of something done as I go! I’ve a couple of avenues still to explore

Good man. I do sometimes wish I took up knitting instead of shooting...much cheaper and no need for early mornings and late nights. So far I have had 3 late nights trying to catch a lamb killing fox...so back out tonight until about 1 then up at 5 and off crow shooting...love it :) 👍

Andy Keane has ground in North/East Yorkshire, I went with him back at the beginning of the year. The place is crawling with roe and he was a quality guide so maybe worth a look for you...

No affiliation, etc, etc

Thanks for the recommendation- I’ve recently found him on social media, another good option just up the road

I got in touch with them before Christmas to ask what they offered and the guy I spoke to was so rude on the phone that I didn't take it any further - I can't imagine outings with him are at all pleasant.

I think I dodged a bullet for sure. Ive since spoken to someone “in the know” who’s heard some quite negative reports recently too. I’ve put it down to experience and made a note in my “to avoid” list! As a newbie stalker getting started out is fairly expensive without being coerced into wasting £900 on a membership that by many accounts doesn’t deliver 😡

Thanks ivorgun2

I knew it couldn’t be all bad, as with anything there’s always two sides or multiple options. What suits some won’t suit others. I do think that at this stage it’s not for me though. Maybe the communication could be improved at their side, I was told different prices etc by different people who contradicted each other etc which made me hesitant to commit.

Thanks for your input, it’s appreciated
