What is the correct way to unload?

Always magazine out or floorplate dropped first whilst the muzzle is pointed in a safe direction.
Then open the bolt, pull back on the charging handle to eject any chambered round.
Following that, visual/tactile inspection of the chamber & you're good to go, or remove the bolt if rules demand it.

ALWAYS check the bloody chamber.

+1 on this. In our gun club we are "taught" to do it this way but also to show the empty rifle to another member (While pointing it in a safe direction) and ask them to confirm that the gun is completely empty of any ammunition and to confirm "clear" - i.e. without a magazine or any ammunition in it!

Edit: I should add that with our club this method applies to both shotguns and rifles!

Point rifle down, safety off or if three position, middle, open bolt and take round out. Stick finger up chamber just for good measure, close bolt, point rifle down safely and pull trigger

but from the above process-- if magazine not removed and you close bolt you reload and then from above fire a round?

Apologies as I'm quite new to all this. But, I have seen films. And they just point the rifle in the air and pul the trigger repeatedly until it stops banging!.Is that not ok then?

Some smart person mentioned .22 rimfires, so, might as well bring muzzle loaders into the mix (Not for deer stalking, mind.) Best way to unload ya muzzle loader is to pull the trigger, preferably when pointing somewhere safe.
Not up in the air though. An Amish in America did that a couple years ago and killed someone a mile away.
Ken.

Bosnian unload. Used to be quite a popular "drill" in certain parts of South East Europe.
