Whilst we are on the discussion of 7mm, when I was boy living in the then Rhodesia, my father had a bolt action rifle which he has always referred to as a 280 Mauser. When we came over to the UK in the mid 1970's he brought it with him, but as he did n't have a use for it it was sold. There are no ohotos of it. I have always wondered what it would have been like? I have tried Googling 280 Mauser, but don't get any answers.

I have a 7mm-08 and a pleasure it is to shoot. It deservedly should get more popular and I hope many more shooters will discover it and enjoy it as much as I do. For what quarry we have in the UK it is as near to perfect (now I've stuck my neck out) as a rifle calibre could be! Now I'll duck!

The fact that the 7mm-08 is still a largely unknown calibre has its compensations; when I was looking to change rifles, GMK had a Sako 85 in stock, whereas there was a long wait for a .308 or similar in the same model. Great calibre, does it all and, as the deer man says, it is pleasant to shoot. It seems to be getting a lot of coverage, including the article in this month's Sporting Rifle, so I hope factory ammuniotion will become more widely available before too long...even 7mm-08 brass seems hard to get hold of at the moment.

Yup, another 7mm08 fan. Had a rifle custom built in that cal after years of hunting - and years of hunting the best general all round calibre (IMHO).
Norma brass is readily available but expensive - that said, with just neck sizing I've not had to throw a case away yet and I'm on about the 12th reload so the cases have paid their way.

stag1933 can you tell me what mounts are on the scope please?
The mounts were an integral part of the steel Zeiss scope and had hooks which allowed it to be removed from the bases on the rifle.
For shooting driven game such as pigs or deer the scope could be taken off and quickly put back on if a long range standing shot was presented.
We refer to them as `claw mounts` and the Germans use words something like `einhaktmontage`.

Apel amongst others still make such mounts. Edward Kettner the chain of shops in Europe also carry them and fit them although there are not cheap.

The 4X scope and claw mounts you got off me were German `Hensoldt`, a similar fit-up to my old 6X Zeiss.
Your scope and mounts came off my Weatherby MK.5, 8X68S rifle which I fitted with Apel mounts and a variable scope before I went on my first Africa trip.

Below is a picture of part of the same mountain and a cull Stag.
It was a hard slog with no quad-bike etc. to help, only brute force but I had over 45 happy years there.
Memories of yesteryear when I was young and fit and until I retired due to open heart surgery with complications.

Very interesting! What brass do you use, 308? Run any over a chronograph yet, if so are you getting standard velocity or more since we have better powder?

I have had my 7mm RM Win XTR for 35 years and its still knocking them dead as.
Bought new with two boxes of ammo for $320 IIRC
Second barrel,fourth scope and fourth stock,if you could get a woman as good you would never have an argument!
