8x68 Finally found one!

Sometimes just when you have given up a gem turns up. Recently I stumbled upon a gem, a 1963 GK Mannlicher in 8x68. I was buying it sight unseen, the owner sent copious photos, plus some photos of some groups he shot.
A leap of faith and I bought it. The previous owner generously supplied 60 brand new RWS cases which are hellishly expensive here.
The rifle came with a Kahles Helia 39 S1 with a #4 reticle with factory fitted AKAH Claw mounts. The scope does not have a windage turret, as was quite common then.
I stripped the rifle down to find that the rear takedown screw located under the trigger guard was quite loose! Needless to say I fixed that.
So far, I have had good results with N560 and RL19 powder using RWS 181gr Conepoint and Dual core projectiles. The best 3 shot group measured 1.009". I have also tried some Hornady 170 grain RNs but they would not shoot very well at all which is disappointing as I acquired 500 cheap! I may persist with them as they were intended for a close range feral pig load.
I cannot post pics yet as the photos I have need to be resized but an SD member has seen the photos, haven't you G ?
Now I am not recoil shy but this Mannlicher with its plastic butt plate hurts over the bench. The bare rifle weighs 7.5 pounds and not much more with the scope mounted.
Shooting offhand the recoil is fine and about what I expected but load testing on a bench after 10 or so shots rattles the teeth.
Regards.
Mike.

Yup, saw them Mike, looks very sweet. I’m surprised the RN bullets aren’t working so well for you, maybe they just need some more ‘play around/development’ time.

How did your recent hunting trip go? Email me with details please.

Deeangeo, unfortunately the trip was cancelled at the last minute due to unforeseen circumstances, however, I am heading off for 10 days hunting saturday next.
The good news is that I received a photo this morning of a nice double 6 Stag my oppo took and his brother is still on 4 legs! So I have 10 days to locate him.
The debate is , should I use the GK 7x64 or the GK 8x68 ?
Regards.
Mike.

Three suggestions, from someone who owns several 8x57 and one 8x60mm ( my second one), but not an 8x68S.

1. Try loading the 170-gr RN with a starting load of 4350, RL17, or 2209 - about 64 grains. I have never gotten the best accuracy out of 170 gr when pushing them faster.

2. Get some Remington 180 gr bullets made for the 8mm Rem Mag, for your zippy load. If you cannot find those, try the Nosler Accubond.

3. 200 gr bullets have been very accurate for me in my 8mm, and they all seem to like them running full steam.

First off , beautiful rifle ! I previously owned a Brno 602 in 8x68 , a very potent round . Like Southern , I got my best accuracy out of the heavier bullets like Nosler 200 gr Partitions and the discontinued Hornady 220 gr Spire Points . I didn't spend a lot of time with the lighter bullets in mine though . I bought it for heavier game and stuck with the above two bullets for the most part .
