Sportsman (Roedale)

Agree entirely, they were very helpfull when I purchased a pair of Geovids, however1 year later I am still waiting a piece for a Cluson gun clamp.

Whilst in there once some guy was looking at a S/H .308, it had only just come in, they wanted £600 for it but they paid £300 for it ealrlier in the week!!

Every time I been in there for specialist stuff it has been a waste of time, esp trying to get a .223 mag for my AICS which they were advertising. As for Litts well I doubt I will ever go there again.

Support your local small gun shop....

Up until a few weeks ago, I would have agreed with you, but then stories started to trickle out about "Shooting Party" in Malmesbury.

I am begining to form the opinion that the only safe way to buy and sell shooting kit in the UK is to become an RFD and deal directly with the manufacturers.

Gents the Sportsmans have mods in stock. it did take a while to get set up.big wheels turn slow. and they also wanted to go through the process of having mods prooved ( personaly i dont see a requirement to have moderator proved, its certainly not legaly required, but if thats what Sportsmans and thier customers want,, ok by me) and may take a while until all shop staff at all sites are informed about whats available.

so what is available:

they currently have 1/2 UNF, M14x1 and 5/8x24 thread sizes on shelf,

with another batch of 1/2 UNF going over shortly.

Plus spigoted versions in M14x1 and M17x1 (to fit and cover excisting reflex threads and spigot) also going over shortly.

They have requested some in 5/8x18 (as they ordered the 5/8x24 by mistake, beats me why the UK go 5/8x18 when the x24 is about the most common suppressor and brake thread world wide, probably a plumbing thread eh !! ha ha but hey, my machine doesnt care what thread)
and some M18x1's will also be ready soon.

As confirmed by some of the guys that have the mods. it is an excellent product, with some impressive scientific developement behind it, and once the startup-retail system at Sportsmans gears up, they should be readily available.

I hope the deal works out to everyones satisfaction.. Ive had enough bad look over the last couple of years to last a lifetime. So 2011 just has to get better..

If I can help anyone out with technical info, or anyonw has requests that cant be met by Sportsmans staff just drop me an email and I will do what I can,

best regards Pete Lincoln

Ahhh but JC not everyone likes or rate Berettas. I still recall the queues caused at the clay shoots when yet another darned Beretta jamed up or went wrong. Yes it was a long time ago but one does nto forget. The only Beretta I was ever interested was the 302 Semi Auto. Nearly brought one but something else came a long.

If an O/U and in that price range I would buy Browning ;). A friend of mine tried to convince me about Berettas and he did have a couple but when he went to a comp guess what he took a Browning and he had at least 4x the number of Brownings than Berettas and that's if we include his semi auto he used fowling..

As for The Sportsman and their sharp practices yep the horror stories have already started round this way since they got their claws into a certain shop. Their lies are quite unbelievable too but they seem to catch quite few out. They have even sent up one of their sales chaps. I met him when I got the shop to sell the Baikal MH18 .222 on comission and he was trying to get me to look at the BSA's and Parker-Hales he claimed they had in Dorset. I declined as I don't trust them to buy from. As it was the commision rate was high but I needed the space opened up so i lost out money wise but managed to secure the other rifle so swings and roundabouts I suppose. Now I know for sure they have their claws in their I won't be going back at all!

I heard that Brownings were made from the swarf that they sweep up in the Beretta factory bulked out with old horseshoes found in fields but that could be just an internet rumour! JC

Ahhhh JC Beretta is the oldest gunmaker in the world so you would have thought by now they would have some ideas how to make a gun wouldn't you... I recall the blowing up 92 Pistols..... naw was not Berettas fault really. Then those faulty O/U's I mentioned. Oh then they brought Sako and Tikka and we had a repeat of blowing up stainless barrels. Yep Beretta sure know how to mess things up :D.

Oh yes and I do happen to have a Belgian made FN ;) it's a mid 50's vintage "Humpback" or Auto Five as it's properly named. I fancied one since I was about 15 years old and finally acquired one about two years ago :D.

Sorry Peter, but as you might have noticed The Sportsman leaves a bad taste in a lot of folks let's hope that it does not effect you too badly.

Its true thats why Brownings go rusty when you just mention the word wildfowling!

never had a problem with any of the 4 Beretta s i have !

Nor me with any of my 5. Each and every one an absolute belter. Haven't tried them with a moderator though... (which is what this thread is actually about!) :D
May be a rather tight sqeeze :D - with regards to the Moderator i would phone sportsmans and tell them you know they have stock and to either pull their finger out or take you business else where.

Couldnt disagree more.....

Visited the Sportsman Dorchester with my swaro's with a dented and damaged eye cup after a stag landed on them...

You can explain that one Robin...

The fella said ill have a couple of them out the back you can have, theyre free..

As it was they were the wrong size but two weeks later i had a call after theyd ordered them that they were there to pick up... no charge...

Also gave me a great deal when i purchased the swaro's......

The guys there are friendly, helpfull and just offered to help with a problem with my rifle which wasnt purchased from them...

Sportsman Gun Centre :D

I wouldnt give them the steam off my morning log!

I bought my very first rifle off them, a Tikka, when it arrived the stock was BROKEN in two pieces, granted that is a courier problem but they had just wrapped the cardboard box in brown paper and posted it. When I phoned them they said that the top loading model was no longer available and I would have to fork out another £100 for the equivalent model that now had a detachable magazine. I coughed up!

6 wks later I still had no rifle so I threatened them with court action, a couple of days later my new rifle arrived, attatched was a letter of apology and a few words saying that they have included a little something extra for me by way of compensation.....

A tin of WD40!!

I hit the roof!!

Oh My God, you mean they actually made some money! Anybody would think it was a business they were running!

Get real guys. They are in it to make money, the same as any other business. I bet if there was a thread about how good the Sportsman was there would be just as many saying how good they are.

I have had some cracking deals from them as well as Macleods, Avalon guns, F A Anderson etc.

I don't buy anything from anybody unless it is a bargain unless I wish to contribute to their welfare fund to help them out:-D
I've had lots of good stuff from the Sportsman but I haven't bought anything from them if they didn't have it in stock:D

I have dealt with sportsmans for yrs, never had a problem, staff are always willing to help when I ring, willing to do a deal on most guns and scopes, have had problems with the odd deerhunter jacket losing buttons, they didn,t havea replacement it in stock so gave me the next model up, better than Avalon who didn,t want to know unless you paid the price they want, which was a dear day for them as we needed a couple of rifles and scopes, ammo etc.

 Funny that the Auto Five I acquired was used on the Fens and shock................... horror it's not all rusty ;).

We are the problem here... if no one supported these stores/retailers/rfd/etc they would soon be out of buisness in no time. i always try an support local UK traders but at the end of the day i want a good product on my time scale at a price i am happy with if not i go elsewhere, as it,s my money i am parting with ....neil

Having read most of this thread I have to say I have always found the Sportsman ok, I travel all over the South and to be fair they look after me. I am just a normal everyday working customer to them but they have been helpful for me and to be fair to them I have had some great deals, last one was a 338 AWM from AI, they even chucked in some extras.

The problem i found with the Sportsman was when i ordered lots of gear they took payment for the lot then informed me that most was out of stock, i ended up waiting nearly 6 moths with all types of excuses, in the end i was still short of some 243 cases so i demanded my money back which took over a month.

Would never recommend to anyone.

Steve
